NLP article about Grays

Recommended Posts

As quoted from NLP, Sunday April 11th 2010

'BUSTED' GRAYS SET FOR RYMAN.

The Grays dream looks over after they were told to leave their ground, announced administration is inevitable and confirmed they are planning for life in the lower leagues. The relegated Blue Square Premier side have been evicted from the Rec after more that 100 years.

Julian Dicks' team have also been deducted two of their 21 points for fielding unregistered players and fined £500 for five breaches of Conference rules.

Grays, under Mick Woodward and managed by Mark Stimson, won the FA Trophy in 2005 and 2006 and helped catapult players such as Michael Kightly, Aaron McLean, Dennis Oli and Gary Hooper into the Football League.

The NLP understands the Blues will not take their place in the Blue Square South next season.

Instead they will apply for the Ryman League - and are in talks about ground sharing with both East Thurrock United and Tilbury.

The New Rec has been sold by the landlords for housing, and Athletic cannot now afford the cost of a Conference - standard stadium share.

Vice chairman Andy Swallow said "We are looking at the Ryman, perhaps the Premier if we can stabilise over the summer. We were talking to Thurrock about a ground share, but simply cannot afford the £55,000 a season they want. We wont be able to play in the Blue Square South unless its there, as we would only get 200 fans".

"We're looking at other options and im hopeful we'll carry on, even if we're likely to go into administration in the very near future. That's a formality, as we dont have a penny. We will play our last game at the Rec against Forest Green on April 24. To be honest, i think the Ryman League is where we belong".

The club needs to rebuild and we must make Grays Athletic a community club, a lot like Dagenham. Hopefully we can get back to the area after a few years away".

Swallow said the Essex club will not appeal over their points deduction. Daryl Robson and Callum Leahy were not correctly registered and Sam Cutler played three times despite not being FA approved. Swallow added; "the Conference say their fax machine is always on. We certainly sent the forms - they didnt receive them. This was October, but it doesnt matter now because we have been relegated".

Ground share with Tilbury would make most sense as its close. You can see Grays floodlights from behind the goal opposite the bar end. At least you can while its still standing. Grays floodlights that is and not Tilbury's bar.

If they havnt got a penny, as stated, i would have thought the ESL would be their best bet. No need to pay players and travelling is at a minimium. As we know, you can rebuild from that.

Well Woodward, when you f*ck up, you f*ck up big time. No messing.

How the mighty have fallen.

Like us, Grays have "lived the dream" and now woken up to the harsh reality that they have to start again from scratch.

I suspect that their landlords were more interested in selling the ground for development than to trying to work out a deal with Grays.

I agree that a ground share with Tilbury might be their best option while they try and re-group for life in the lower leagues.

I would say their best bet is at Tilbury but it's up to them, anywhere they can play a game really.

In todays Star it says Grays will be playing in the Rym Prem, wonder if thats true?

Let's face it,the last 10 years or so have been a joke when it comes to who goes down and who don't.

Until the footballing authorities get a grip on the clubs to stop them spending above their means this will continue.let's face it football clubs are about the best way to launder money

How?

Tilbury is not Ryman Premier graded as far as I know.

If they cannot afford Conference south, can they afford Ryman Premier?

We had to drop 3 divisions, why do they only have to drop 2?
