HORNCHURCH 1 MAIDSTONE 0

Sam Sloma after injury and Andy Tomlinson after suspension returned to the starting line up on a bright and sunny day when the temperature reached near heat wave proportions. Maidstone have a very good away record and a very good away following. They were expected to bring three coach loads of supporters with them, but following the story that they intend to ground share at Chatham next season, it did not go down well with their away following, and only a mere handful came to the Bridge.

Urchins kicked towards the windmill end of the ground and could have taken the lead in the fifth minute when Tambeson Eyong powered through, outpaced two defenders, and hit his shot just wide of he post. And shortly afterwards an Andy Tomlinson free kick dropped invitingly for Ross Wall, who turned sharply and his goal bound shot was saved by Andy Walker. A long throw from Billy Coyne was played on by Elliot Styles to Mervin Abraham, whose overhead kick skimmed the post.

Maidstone came back strongly and were awarded a free kick thirty yards out. Danny Hockton crashed his shot past the wall and Darren Behcet dived to touch the ball around the post for a corner, which was taken by Antonio Gonnella and cleared by Rickie Hayles. Play then settled down in midfield although when Jamie Dormer fed a good pass to Abraham, Mervin was just over the bar with his shot. Hayles to Eyong, who set off on one of his now notorious power runs, and he was tackled by Nathan Paul as he was about to shoot, resulting in a corner. Tomlinson’s kick was punched away by Walker but only as far as Jamie Dormer whose follow up shot was scrambled off the line.

Maidstone retaliated with a good run by Gonnella which ended when Billy Coyne tackled to give away a corner. Gonnella floated the ball over and it rebounded to Dormer who put the ball out for another corner, which this time was cleared by Sam Sloma. Eyong then exchanged passes with Ross Wall and set off again, pounding past three defenders, and he crashed his shot just inches wide. Another Gonnella corner found James Peacock in a good position, but he crashed his shot high over the bar. Eyong took a good pass from Hayles and this time his shot was well saved by Walker, and shortly before half time Darren Behcet made an excellent save from a header by Danny Hockton, tipping the ball out for a corner

After an end to end first half, in which both teams could have taken the lead, the second half started slowly, but when Coyne and Wall combined, Ross put the ball into the middle where Michael Spencer was beaten to the ball by a quick reacting Walker. Hayles headed over from a Tomlinson free kick, and Spencer fired wide from a Wall pass, whilst a powerful free kick by Rowland Edge brought a magnificent save out of Darren Behcet. Soz Yao came on for the non stop Mervin Abraham, and Sloma tackled well to prevent Hockton from breaking through.

And then came the goal which many consider to rank among the best of the season. Darren Behcet caught the ball as Hockton moved in, and Darren then looked up, realised that the visiting defence had moved perhaps too far up the field and he powered the ball high into the air. Seventy yards away ROSS WALL raced into perfect position to take the pass, and with three defenders closing in rapidly, and with keeper Walker racing out of goal, Ross calmly chipped a right footed shot high over the keeper and into the net, Simon Parker style.

Walker held a dipping Tomlinson corner, and a long through pass by Sloma found Wall, but this time the lobbed shot was grabbed by Walker. Gonnella put a corner behind the goal, and at the other end Spencer picked out Sam Sloma whose shot was blocked by a defender. A Tomlinson free kick was scrambled off the line, two Soz Yao attempts were blocked in quick succession, and Rickie Hayles headed just wide from Spencer’s pass.

Another Gonnella corner was cleared by Hayles and Peacock was somewhat fortunate to escape a second yellow following a mistimed tackle. Tomlinson took the free kick which was turned around the post, Tomlinson’s corner was headed just over the bar by Rickie Hayles. And in a season where at times there have been perhaps too many controversial refereeing decisions, today’s referee, Mr G. Muge, kept the game flowing, and earned the respect of both teams with an excellent performance.
