This Is Spot On....

It IS a good read, although many of the ideas for helping are only really appropriate for supporters who live fairly close to the ground.

What is interesting is that they mention the number of 'regular faces', willing to roll their sleeves up and help, is about 20 out of 200 fans.

Why 'interesting'? Well, I have been involved with the steam railway preservation movement for some time, and it seems that for many preservation societies the 'active' workforce numbers about 10% of their paid-up membership. This article would suggest that this '10% rule' applies to other activities as well.

The key question to answer is: in today's society, with overwhelming pressures of work, etc, how can voluntary groups improve this 10% ratio?

I don't have an answer, but I am certain that their are many hundreds of other groups and societies who would also like to know...

This is a good point PJ - the one thing we do not know is how many of the 90% who don't help at Slough perhaps are part of the 10% somewhere else, like your Railway Preservation Group. Everybody has multiple interests, but can only afford the time, effort and money on top of all their domestic chores, studying, etc, to be a 10percenter for one activity.

There will of course be those who are 90percenters for everything they do, but we should not condemn everybody who does not share our passion to the same extent - they may be giving elsewhere!

The other thing to consider is that as a fan you can be passionate about a team without wanting to get involved with the messy stuff. Primarily football fans want to cheer their team, buy the shirt and talk about it down the pub, not get caught up in web that is behind the scenes

Well said BFR and spot on . I am one of those fans you say . Not that I don't want to help or I don't care at all , it's got to the point that even over the last 10 years even , it's that all of this annual problems we have just seems second nature or just fed up with it . Please don't get the wrong idea in what i'm saying , I just want to wear amber and support my team .

BFR and Wayne, you're completely missing the point and, to an outsider like myself, are completely indicative of the malaise at STFC which is the main reason why you're in the [******].

Has it not occurred to you that this 'minimal' level of involvement isn't acceptable at this point of time for YOUR club and this sort of attitude will easily lead to you not actually having a club to 'just want to wear amber and support my team'! <img src="/images/graemlins/alert.gif" alt="" />

I don't think we're missing the point at all . I've come to realise in this world , it doesn't matter if there is 3,30,3000,30000 helping out/demonstrating , the way things are and especially with our council and how our club is run , you get kicked in the goolies .

What I have been saying for years !!

And if you care you will make time......

I have been secretary for STSA for over 23 years now - and its the same faces that always help...

many give excuses that they are too busy and have other commitments...yes we understand....and others give excuses while there is no future then what is the point to help !

all valid reason in their own opion !

but is like life if you want some thing bad you will always find time !

and it so easy just to sit back and let the few continue to try and do there best ! but it would be nice that a few more find a bit of time to help...

because you can do it if you real want to and care enough about your club....

Great Article from Aylesbury...

come on you Rebels ...the club is worth it....

up the Rebels....
