BILLERICAY 2 HORNCHURCH 0

Urchins long injury list increased with Sam Sloma unable to play due to the injury picked up two days previously. Andy Tomlinson was suspended, so Mitchell Stuart-Evans and Ronnie Fletcher came into the starting line up, with Tommy Black named as substitute. On a bumpy and sloping pitch, with large bare patches, and with a toy helicopter making itself a nuisance on the lower pitch, Hornchurch kicked off into the face of the gale, with an impressive following that outnumbered the home support.

Urchins stormed forward in the first half, despite the gale, and could have opened the scoring in the first minute, when Billy Coyne took a long throw and sent Michael away on the left. Michael carried on and his goal bound shot was deflected out for a corner. Michael Spencer took the corner, Jamie Dormer played the ball back to Michael Spencer and Harrison Chatting managed to scramble the ball to safety. Hornchurch were almost caught out when a long clearance by home keeper Paul Nichols bounced high and almost went over Darren Behcet’s head, but Darren gathered the ball well despite the close attention of Billy Bricknell, who collided heavily with the keeper.

Michael Spencer won a corner on the left side, and played the ball to Dormer, and thence back to Michael, who neatly played the ball into the middle to Elliot Styles, whose header crashed against the underside of the bar , and rebounded back to Mitchell Stuart-Evans whose follow up shot skimmed the crossbar. A breakaway allowed Chatting a run at goal but his shot was saved by Behcet, whilst Ronnie Fletcher, who had already needed lengthy attention following a hard tackle, conceded a corner which Dave Wareham took and Behcet caught. Behcet then caught another corner, this time from Chatting. A good run down the left by Wareham ended when Stuart-Evans tackled to concede a corner, and the ball came over into the path of Russell Pond, whose first time drive was cleared off the line by Rickie Hayles.

The ball was propelled upfield for Ross Wall who turned it inside to Elliot Styles, whose shot went wide of the post, Styles then sent Mervin Abraham clear and keeper Nichols made an excellent save, the ball running loose to Wall whose follow up shot was blocked. Mervin Abraham then turned inside of Mick Haswell to sent a perfect pass out to Tambeson Eyong. Tambeson raced goalwards, stormed past two tackles and crashed his shot hard against the post, and Ian Cousins reacted quickly to put the ball out for a corner. Michael Spencer took the corner and Eyong headed inches over the bar.

Ronnie Fletcher was again on the receiving end of a mistimed tackle and had to be replaced by Jonathan Spencer, whilst Elliot Styles also needed attention for a head injury for the fifth match in succession. Tambeson played a good pass through to Ross Wall, but Ross hit his shot into the side netting, and in a rare home breakaway Darren Behcet made an excellent save from Billy Bricknell. Wall then put Abraham clear and Nichols rushed out to make another excellent save to keep Billericay in the match.

A Stuart-Evans free kick found Styles, whose header was well saved by Nichols, and this led to another break away by Billericay, when Wareham opened up the left side to give Chatting a shooting chance, and his hard shot was cleared off the line by Stuart-Evans. Wareham then cut inside and his shot rebounded off the post, with Stuart-Evans again clearing, this time for a corner. Another Wareham corner was cleared and in stoppage time a Michael Spencer corner was punched away by Nichols, but only as far as Eyong, whose shot cannoned off the post.

Only three minutes was added on in the first half despite the many stoppages, all of which were for injuries to Hornchurch players.

The wind diminished for the second half, and Hornchurch started well when Eyong touched through to Ross Wall, who played the ball out to Michael Spencer. Michael carried on, cut inside and his shot cannoned back off the post, with Greg Bates scrambling the ball away. And if it was not enough to hit the woodwork four times, Hornchurch promptly did it again for a fifth time. Eyong, who was causing chaos in the home defence, again powered through and his shot forced a brilliant save from Nichols, and the ball rebounded to Michael Spencer, who this time hit the angle of the post and bar with his shot.

A penalty seemed an absolute certainty when Jonathan Spencer played the ball ahead of Ross Wall, who was unceremoniously bundled off the ball, but no action was taken. A succession of long throws by Billy Coyne were cleared, and then it was Billy to Rickie, and on to Tambeson, and thence to Dormer who fired his shot wide of the post. Soz Yao came on for Mervin Abraham. Danny Green had a half chance for Billericay but Jonathan Spencer calmly shielded the ball out of play. A Billy Coyne throw was returned by Rickie Hayles and Billy played the ball into the goalmouth where Soz Yao saw his shot well saved by Nichols.

Tommy Black came on for Tambeson Eyong, who was loudly applauded by the large away following as he went off, having created havoc in the home defence. Green made another good run for the home side, racing through from the half way line, and he hit his shot wide of the post. A bad defensive mix up led to the opening Billericay goal. Behcet had made an excellent save from Danny Charge, but although the ball was cleared deep upfield, it was promptly played back and out to the left where Charge eluded Jonathan Spencer and played the ball low into the middle, for BILLT BRICKNELL to get the final touch.

Hornchurch came forward time and again, and their supporters were increasingly annoyed at the blatant time wasting tactics which were being ignored. In addition, two players had been booked whilst similar tackles by the home side had not been penalised. With only three minutes added on at the end, the second goal came in farcical circumstances. With no danger at all, a back pass to Darren Behcet stopped short on the uneven surface, and Mitchell Stuart-Evans did enough to shield the ball, which was then scooped away by Darren Behcet, only for the linesman to signal a penalty and the referee, closer to the half way line than to the goal area, concurred, and then sent Mitchell Stuart-Evans off. Hornchurch have been victims of several penalty decisions this season, but none was more farcical than this one, and BILLY BRICKNELL made it two nil from the spot.

Hornchurch had hit the woodwork five times, dominated play for long periods, but still they came away with nothing.

PMSL,same old fools falling for the report time and time again.

Although 50 hx fans ar new lodge this afternoon is the biggest load of bollox

Was surprised how many we did have at new lodge today.

Would of said 50 plus behind the goal plus another 50-60 all around the ground, probably a bit more, hence the crowd of over 600

:Yes there was and you had a goodish number of the support...I would say shading over the ton, maybe...

Story of the game...Urchins, hit the woodwork five time...Billericay, hit woodwork twice, cleared off the line twice, put it back in the back of the net twice. Cricky, the most consistant we've been all season!!!

PS - perhaps your strikers need a wider goal?

Sid - second attempt - sorry but each time I try and post a message, I get a lot of html language, so have deleted the earlier post.

Soz came on for Mervin on 68.

Tommy Black came on for Eyong on 74.

Tam was given a standing ovation by the 350 Urchins supporters as he went off.

The attendance by the way was 616, compared to just 357 at the previous Billericay home match.
