Berkos back

Recommended Posts

firstly hello to everyone who uses the ssmfl forums. I'd just like to introduce myself as im a new user on here. As you can probably tell im a supporter of the new Berkhamsted FC, who are having a good first ever season with maybe too many "exciting" high scoring games (for both sides in many cases). Im looking forward to next season in division 1 so long as Mr Vipond manages to get a few decent defenders as it will be a whole lot tougher than division 2.

Comrade - Welcome to the Forum. As a starter for ten can I ask why Mick Vipond got rid of Russell Chandler if you are in need of quality defenders

As far as im aware it may be down to age rather than quality although the games i have seen Russell Chandler play in did his own cause no favours spending more time on the ground than with the ball. Recently the Carmichael brothers have signed from Bletchley and i believe there will be further additions to the squad over the summer.

Comrade - You can't beat experience in the SSML and Russell Chandler, who has even played with David Beckham at Youth level, was heaven made for Berkhamsted, he rarely, if at all, puts a foot wrong in a game or a pass astray yet the outspoken Mick Vipond upset him

I've seen Russell Chandler play a few times too and tend to agree with Comrade on this one.

I agree that experience is an essential in this league but had you seen him play this season you would have been shocked at the overall performance, except for 2 or 3 good crosses when he got forward he was regularly beaten at the back by many ordinary players. When i read up about him on his first Berko appearance i thought he would be the seasons outstanding player given his higher level experience but it just didn't happen.

Comrade - Well that is very strange as when Russell was with Tokyngton Manor earlier in the season at a higher level, and only a short time before joining Berkhamsted, he was the best thing since sliced bread and never put a foot wrong, you don't become a poor player overnight!

Depends on how much you had to drink the night before in my experience..... ;)

Rhodes is spot on.In the 14 games Chandler played for us we conceded only 9 goals when he was on the pitch, thats 0.64 goals per game.Statistically the defence was extremely stronger with him in the side compared to him not in the side.He also created more goals going forward than any other right back at the club.

As a berkhamsted supporter myself,i was always pleased with his performances and he NEVER once lost a personal battle with his opposing number unlike other defenders vipond put in his position after his sending off namely the awful Steve Pratt and the young Jamie Gavin.

What do i know, its a matter of opinion whether he is great or poor. I found a lot of his play frustrating then in hindsight perhaps because he was playing with players with less vision than himself it may have made what could have been a clever long ball into a waste. As for Steve Pratt i am in total agreement, he was dire at Wodson Park in the HSCT and i believe has not been seen since thankfully.

Anorak - I think that your post says it all really and there is nothing further to add, Chandler has rubbed shoulders with the great and the good in football throughout his illustrious career including David Beckham at Youth level so he's obviously no mug, his brother Shayne was also a great player in his day in the old fashioned stopper centre half mould

Think being at Tik Tok may have been his downfall then.

And you're spot on Rhodes, players don't become poor overnight, it's just that the opposition players become fitter, stronger and quicker :smashfreakb:

Russell Chandler was with us for the early part of the season and I cannot recollect him putting a foot wrong, he was by far the man of the match in every game he played particularly the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie at Chalfont St Peter in August where he was unplayable, like Messi was last night, and kept Chalfont at bay almost single handedly

Are the Carmichael brothers the 2 short lads who play in midfield and up front?

monkey- ill have to pass on that one as i know nothing about these 2 apart from what was written in the match programme for the league game with Padbury.

Quote- "Competition for places is hotting up at Broadwater as we welcome to the squad four defenders who were not able to play for us last weekend. one is our skipper Anthony Beamish, who has now completed the one match ban, that was picked up in the cup game with Padbury. The other three are new signings arriving in time to bet tomorrows transfer deadline and help with the title run in. Will Hattan joins from Tring Corinthians and the Carmichael brothers (Jim and Simon) join from Bletchley Town. They have higher league experience with Barton Rovers and Clacton. We needed extra defenders, as we have recently lost two, through Russel Chandler leaving and Jamie Gavin being ruled out for the season with the injury he picked up on saturday"

Dobber- I have no position at the club so don't know the ins and outs, i go along mainly to socialise and watch the matches with my son and a few mates with a few beers throughout the afternoon or evening.

Cheers for coming back to me......i was with aston clinton for the first 3 months of this season and we played Bletchley first game of the season.....they were poor but they had 2 lads who were top draw! Word was going round about them leaving so it must have been them.........................i was also in attendance for the berko aston game which finished 1 all............did you get to that one yourself?

Monkey- Yes i was there, i was very impressed with Aston Clinton and think we were lucky to get the draw if im honest. They do play a much better style to what Berko have done this season and the title will go all the way i think after the shock loss at Totternhoe a few weeks back.
