HORNCHURCH 1 ASHFORD 0

News of injuries is that Jo Flack is likely to miss the rest of the season, as is Jonathan Hunt. Tommy Black came in for his debut, having signed from Hemel Hempstead, after playing for Arsenal, (two first team appearances), Crystal Palace and Southend. Joe Bouchard was included in the squad for the first time since returning to the Bridge.

On a mild day Hornchurch kicked towards the windmill end although neither team could really penetrate two solid defences for long periods. Ashford had the first half chance when Jones Anwah turned sharply to hit his shot hard at goal, but Rickie Hayles had covered well to block the ball. When Darren Behcet pumped a long clearance up the field, Mervin Abraham exchanged passes with Ross Wall and then ran powerfully goalwards, and Craig Ross rushed out to save well. A long throw from Billy Coyne was headed narrowly wide by Elliot Styles, whilst at the other end, Paul Johnson set up Brian Haule who lobbed the ball over Behcet and on to the roof of the net. Ross Wall took a pass from Coyne but Femi Ilesanmi tackled well, and Rickie Hayles almost reached a long throw from Billy Coyne, and although Craig Ross appeared to touch the ball out, a goal kick was awarded.

Dormer to Sloma, and his run towards goal was stopped by Vinnie O’Sullivan who conceded a corner. Tommy Black took the kick and Ross caught the ball under the bar. Darren Behcet then did likewise at the other end when he rose to catch a Warren Harris corner, and Darren pumped the ball deep upfield, and Craig Ross just won the chase for the ball as Mervin Abraham swooped in at speed. Styles then headed a long cross back to Wall, who touched on to Abraham and Craig Ross threw himself at Mervin’s feet to save. Brian Haule was booked for a badly mistimed tackle on Hayles, but Billy Coyne’s free kick drifted harmlessly out of play. Michael Spencer cut out a good cross from Harris on the right and as half time approached Sloma set off on a long run that ended with O’Sullivan intercepting the cross, and Urchins nearly scored right on the interval when a long throw from Michael Spencer found Wall who gave Eyong a shooting chance, but his shot was wide.

Hornchurch had the majority of the play in the second half. Michael Spencer created an opening for Mervin Abraham who touched on to Tambeson Eyong, who in turn sidefooted to Ross Wall, and Ross hit the ball first time, the shot being blocked. An Eyong solo run through the defence saw an excellent shot which was saved well by Craig Ross who turned the ball out for a corner, whilst a Billy Coyne throw reached Wall, who set up Eyong for another shot which this time skimmed he post.

Urchins appeared to have taken the lead when Elliot Styles headed powerfully home from Sam Sloma’s free kick, but the goal was disallowed when the linesman signalled offside, a decision which did not go down at all well with the crowd. Russell Canderton was then booked for a very badly mistimed tackle on Tambeson Eyong, who was powering through the middle, and many considered a red card was the only possible decision, but the net result was that Canderton escaped with a yellow and Eyong had to limp off, to be replaced soon after by Soz Yao. Billy Coyne took the free kick and Ross Wall created an opening for Jamie Dormer, and Jamie’s first time drive saw Craig Ross make an excellent save to turn the ball around the post for a corner.

A rare Ashford attack was started by Alain Behi with a good pass out to Warren Harris, and his cross was turned out for a corner, which Paul Johnson put behind the goal for a goal kick. Mitchell Stuart-Evans came on for Sam Sloma, and a reshuffle meant that Billy Coyne switched over to the left, Michael Spencer came more forward and Tommy Black moved out to the left wing. Black and Soz Yao combined well to give Abraham an opening, and O’Sullivan covered well to prevent the shot, and then Michael Spencer fired over after Yao had slotted the ball through to him. A corner by Alain Behi was headed out by Stuart-Evans, and Hornchurch nearly scored when Black’s free kick found Wall, Yao and Abraham all in front of goal, but the ball was scrambled off the line. Abraham had another shot blocked after he had run on to meet a Billy Coyne throw, but the best chance fell to Mervin Abraham who went racing through only to be scythed down. Inexplicably, not only did the defender escape a red card, but the referee allowed play to continue.

Ashford briefly threatened, urged on by a very noisy set of directors, and two supporters. Brett Cooper fed a good pass to Jamie Lawrence, and Behcet did well to hold on to the difficult cross, and a Canderton throw was deflected for a corner which Behcet caught in fine style. Elliot Styles collided with the post and needed lengthy treatment, and four minutes were signalled for stoppages. In the fifth minute of the four minutes added on, Billy Coyne took a long throw and Ross Wall’s shot went out for a corner. Tommy Black floated the ball into the goalmouth and ELLIOT STYLES hurled himself forward to head home. One nil, but it was not all over yet. In the sixth minute of the four minutes added on, Ashford threw everyone forward, and Soz Yao conceded a free kick on the edge of the area, out on the left side of the pitch. Everyone went up, including keeper Craig Ross, and Urchins quickly brought on Ronnie Fletcher. Over came the ball, it was half cleared, and played back again, and cleared again, and the full time whistle went. Three points, and another step closer to playing in the same league as Grays next season.
