Monday 29th March 2010 – Essex Senior Cup final – at Dagenham

HORNCHURCH - COLCHESTER UTD

HFC – Darren Behcet –Mitchell Stuart-Evans - Billy Coyne –Ronnie Fletcher – Elliot Styles © - Jamie Dormer - Andy Tomlinson - Michael Spencer - Jo Flack – Ronsard Kehi – Michael Spencer

Subs – Connor Halsey – Joe Pattison – Liam Valentine – Frankie Williams – Michael Bowditch

CU – Mark Cousins © - Bradley Hamilton – Tom Bender – Matt Heath - Danny Batth – Jonjo O’Toole – Sam Corcoran – David Fox – Ashley Vincent – Craig Arnott - John Pavitt

Subs – Shane Cussack – Jordan Lartey – Connor McCloskey – Trevor Ajim – Jordan Sanderson

Officials – John Hopkins with John McGill and Nicholas Grote

With several players out with injury and others cup tied, the line up more or less picked itself, and the substitutes included four players from the youth team, three of whom have not previously been included in the first team squad. Colchester in marked contrast named eight of their first team.

By 6 pm the large social club at Dagenham was packed solid, a sea of red and white, and there was a steady stream of Hornchurch supporters moving along Victoria Road. At 7pm The weather began to get decidedly wet, and torrential rain quickly turned the car park into a mini lake. At 7.15 the chairman of the Essex FA made a short speech, welcoming both sets of officials and handing out the prize money cheques to three of the four semi finalists, (there was no one present from Chelmsford). And five minutes later the referee inspected the pitch and called the match off.

Although this is the first match to be postponed because of the weather this season at Dagenham, the referee was left with no other choice, as the Pondfield Road end of the ground lived up to its name and large areas of the pitch were up to ankle deep in water. The Victoria Road half of the ground was not so bad, but there were still very large puddles. With heavy rain forecast, there was no other alternative. A great disappointment for the 1500 Urchins supporters who had waited patiently in the pouring rain for the gates to open.

Disappointingly there was less than 50 Colchester supporters present.

Despite all the advance publicity that only the Pondfield Road stand (the new one behind the goal) would be open, the main stand at the side was open.

With so many Hornchurch supporters already inside the ground, and with hundreds more streaming down Victoria Road, it was a great disappointment that the match could not go ahead.

At five to eight and there was a mini lake stretching from the D of the penalty area to the semi circle at the half way line, and other puddles and surface water.
