Essex Senior Cup Final - match off!!

The Essex Senior Cup Final between AFC Hornchurch and Colchester United at Dagenham and Redbridge's ground has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The match was called off by referee John Hopkins little more than 15 minutes before kick-off, after torrential rain throughout the afternoon left the Victoria Road pitch at Dagenham waterlogged.

Both goalmouths were left saturated and the rain showed little sign of relenting.

No date has been announced yet for the rearranged fixture and tickets will be valid for the new fixture.

Needless to say the team would prefer as many people as possible to be at Dagenham tonight to support the players, but we are also aware that some cannot make it for whatever reason.

Colchester United first team coach Joe Dunne expressed his disappointment after their Essex Senior Cup Final was postponed.

Heavy rain left the Victoria Road pitch at Dagenham saturated, leading to the U's game against AFC Hornchurch being called off less than 20 minutes before scheduled kick-off time.

Dunne was set to lead the Colchester team, which was expected to feature the likes of John-Joe O'Toole, Matt Heath and Ashley Vincent.

Dunne told the Gazette: "We're really disappointed but there's no way the game could have been played.

"We had picked a really strong team and we paid the competition the respect it deserves.

"The Essex FA have done a good job getting everything together here tonight and it's desperately disappointing."

Despite his disappointment at the game being called off, Dunne admitted it was the correct choice.

"It was the right decision," he said.

"We turned up and there was a little bit of water in the goalmouths.

"But all of a sudden the rain started and it was relentless.

"The pitch was so good underneath it but there was nowhere for the water to go.

"It would have been a bit of a farce."

Feel totally mugged off tonight!

If the pitch was in that bad of a condition tonight then why wasnt a pitch inspection announced earlier, it would have saved us the journey and would have saved some of us a lot of money! Yellow has lost about £30 getting train, entrance, food.

There was nothing from them, on our site or on here (not our fault) to do with a pitch inspection.

Ive wasted money on my oyster card that i use for work, lost out on a refund that a total to$$er at the Dagenham sh!t hole just shrugged his shoulders at!!

Im totaly disgusted the way a league 2 club just shoved us out of their ground, after a half hearted announcement saying the game was called off.

Take their money and treat them like sh!t is their attitude! No respesct what so ever for a little non league team!

Also feel sorry for the players (Hornchurch) whos time has also been wasted.

If this game was played at Southend then i bet it wouldnt have got called off!!
