Great Wakering 0 Billericay Town 2

Recommended Posts

A game very much like the last pre season friendly we had there last year ('cept on a Tuesday night this time). Two very good goals scored by Danny Hockton and Mike Hunter(?).

I thought the first half was better with a couple of players catching my eye but sooooo many names I'd best not mention them in case I get the wrong person.

Gary Henty had a good first half and Russ Penn and gary Ansell did well. JJ and Mark Fay showed safe hands and pulled off a couple of good saves (best one goes to Mark - sorry JJ).

Overall, a satisfactory game with a chance to see the new players and trialists.

Just a few I picked out, I only caught the Christian names though:

Jean Marie ??????, played up front in the first half, great touch and strong.

Marlon ?????, played at 11 in the second half, caused problems down the left, skillful, maybe needs to release it a bit earlier though (a la Chris Stowe).

Sam ????? played at left back in the second half, comfortable on the ball, young and attack minded.

I realise it's only early days and that the best combinations haven't been sorted out yet, but the back four in the first half looked decidedly dodgy to me, we should have conceded in the first minute. Second half the back four looked rusty but more solid and comfortable with the ball. That's my tuppence worth.

Was very impressed with (that guy from Crawley??)put in a lovely cross for second goal...The front looked more "authorative" - Created a lot of openings, but sometimes seemed reluctant to have a pop at goal...There were a number of others that I thought can mix it well in the premier, but got no chance of naming names yet !!!

First laugh of the new season goes to the tannoy announcer "Anyone with cars parked north in the road outside the carpark will be towed away by the police" - Remember to bring compasses to all away games now !!! Oh, and the ref did seem to be whistle happy in the second half...All in all a promising start....

My pick of the bunch was:

jj, sam (left back 2nd half, good on ball), J.Lee (right back 1st half, good going foward, hit the bar for first goal), L.Hunter (mid 2nd half, good on ball, eager to get in box), G.Henty (mid 1st half, worked hard, always looking for the ball), Marlon (left mid 2nd half, looked tricky), D.Hockton (foward 1st half, 1st goal, battled hard).

Think we are in urgent need of two centre halfs. I did think that there was quite afew players who are not going to be up to the standard come the start of the season. But they are on trial, so maybe they will not stay.

Overall a good performance for our first pre season game, plus we were playing a team who have already played afew games and have a much more constructed team.

Ooooppps I think I need to apologise to Little Miss Urchin for being so off hand!!!

I didn't notice the "Little Miss" and thought you were Urchin Boy in another guise.

We here at Billericay are not rude to the ladies of the game...

Please accept my apologies.

To be perfectly frank, I thought Trenkel looked like a First Division player struggling to step up a grade (ok, it was his first game). He is clearly not an athlete, and on at least three occasions his mind had wandered back to last season while he waited for the ball to arrive at his feet in the pen. area. A more experiencedand athletic striker would have gone to meet the ball and got a strike on goal. The not-so-lean not-so-mean Rovers centre-backs had little trouble with heading duels against any of the Billericay strikers on show, except for maybe Gary Ansell.

Hmmmmmm, Ray, I think we need to get a reality check here. First game out in what was a trial team as I presume that Justin was using it to see how people perform (okay in your eyes he didn't) and play together. You can use the training games on a Saturday session as much as you want but it isn't a subsitute for a real game. So that was yesterdays trial, so to speak.

I think I spoke to some of the guys behind the goal and we were only going to mention those players who caught our eye and leave those that didn't do much alone as it isn't really fair to point out faults at this stage of the season.

So if we could keep it positive for the time being and give those players a chance. There is plenty of the "real" season to "air" gripes and grievences about results and point fingers as to who is to blame, blah, blah, blah.
