Cup Eligibility

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question regarding player eligibility for the CCL Division 1 League Cup.

Are there any restrictions on promoting reserve team players into the first team squad for the semi-final stage?

I have read the rules, but wanted to double check. My view was that the rules were in place to stop clubs bringing in players from a higher level to improve their squads for cup games?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Local competition rule that is adminstered by the league. No need for a Match Official to know the answer :) I would recommend a secretary of a club to know this.

Do we have any of those types on here ?

36.8 a) Each player must be a bona fide member of his club and duly registered in accordance with League Rule 6.

B) A player may only play for one club in the Premier Reserve Challenge Cup. He may play for a different club in the Division One Reserve Challenge Cup, provided that in all other respects he is properly registered.

c) No player shall be eligible to play in a semi-final or final match unless he has played at least three times for his club in qualifying matches played under the jurisdiction of the Competition during the current season and provided that, in the case of reserve competitions, he has played more qualifying reserve matches than qualifying premier matches. Qualifying matches shall be all matches played under the auspices of the Combined Counties League.

d) Any club playing ineligible players will forfeit the match concerned to their opponents and the club shall be fined (See Fines Tariff), and/or dealt with as the Board may decide.

Thanks for the reply.

My query was actually specific to reserve team players progressing to the first team for cup games. I had been advised that as a player had played x number of reserve games that they were not eligible for the first team. However after posting this message, I received a second email stating that this information was incorrect and players can play for the first team as long as they have played 3 games for the club.

Thanks for everyones help though.

Some rules could be better written IMO.

Myself and our secretary were trying to decipher a Surrey Premier Cup rule this season regarding what constitutes a reserve player for this competition (only applicable to Premier division teams, division one teams can basically play who they like).

In the end we had to contact Surrey FA for clarification. It turns out the rule was re-written a couple of seasons ago to make it clearer. It must have been a nightmare before that!

"If a player has registered more league and/or cup games in the reserve team of a club than the first team, then he shall be deemed a reserve team player. Equal numbers of appearances for both reserve team and first team competition games, do not qualify as more than, and the player is eligible to play for the reserve team."

You must have played more games for the reserves than the first team. Easy enough. Equal numbers is not more than. Fair enough, that means the player can't play, except they can.

And what about if they haven't played for either side? Does zero count as equal numbers? Turns out it does.

There have been some high profile casualties in the Surrey Senior Cup recently as well. Players who have played in the quarter-final have been ineligible for the semis as they change the time the players have to been registered with the clubs from 7 days to 28 days for the semis and final.

Who'd be a secretary?
