Assistant Referee/The Coffin End

Whilst we're all getting uptight about yesterday's game (and I was there too) what about about some consideration on these freezing cold days for the match officials.

We are all used to seeing players running about in track suits, or whatever you call them nowadays, that look like space suits as well as wearing gloves, extra "t"shirts under their shirts plus tights or whatever they are called but does anybody consider the officials?

It never appears to me that they wear such additional garments and yesterday, in the second half particularly, the poor guy at the Coffin End looked frozen to death . Whilst the Assistant Ref in front of the stand has a sporting chance with a degree of shelter and the Referee by the very nature of his job has the opportunity to move around and keep his circulation going, the Coffin End man is totally exposed to the elements. At one point he almost looked as though rigor mortis was setting in!

I don't expect much response to this, and indeed short of actually building a stand don't know what we can do about it, but perhaps if we think about that it might make our own problems seem somewhat less.

A lot of the officials we get in this leagure, should stick their flags up the backsides and set light to it to keep warm.
