I know its still 4-5 months off but who would you like to see at the bridge or where would you like to play a pre season game.

Obviously we are not going to get man utd, celtic, real madrid or barca at the bridge neither are we going to get a trip to the nou camp but maybe we could get the odd biggish club down to the bridge or even a nice little away trip to some decent ground a few leagues up

You could have the first three or four rounds of the Ryman League Cup or the Essex Senior Cup played in July/August.

I do realise that some league and county officials face new technology the same way as some Victorians did the iron horse.

But if the Europa Cup can be drawn months in advance, how hard would it be to draw the first three/four rounds of each competition?

Travelling would be minimal in most cases and who wouldn't mind an August trip to Lowestoft in preference to January?

Most sides play around seven or eight pre-season games and not all against prestigious clubs.

Obviously not all the ties could be completed, but it would certainly break the back of either competition, give a little zest to a July/August evening/afternoon and come the start of the season, officials of both comps just have to take stock on what has been completed and then fit in the remaining fixtures as per.

We are not always going to get winters like the current one, but come November, one only has to peruse the attendances at most matches in said competitions to realise that most fans couldn't give a monkey's chuff about them - until the semi-final/final stage.

Not a bad idea at all. I can't get too excited about pre season friendlies these days.. With all the triallists on show, numerous substitutions and the more prestigious teams playing a load of youth players against you, they're hardly great entertainment for the fans and are more a way of players getting fitness.

The RLC and ESC hardly attract fantastic attendances especially as they're played during the winter months so it would make more sense to play them at a time when spectators are more inclined to watch a competitive game of football.

That is a very good idea Coup. A good idea from a Romford supporter , who would have thought it.

They do play some form Herts charity Cup in pre season Hertfordshire so it should work at some degree in pre season Essex. As you say, even if it is only the first 3 rounds or so. Crowds would most certainly go up.

It is such a good idear the 90 year old blaziers at Essex F.A. will definatly say "NO" !!!!!!

Being a bunch of tossers that they are.

Pre-season - as to when it starts - has always been a mess of pottage this side of the English/Sweaty border.

I remember an incident a few years ago when Blyth Spartans? tried to arrange a charity match in June. However, the good old suits in the Northumberland FA ivory tower, decided to invoke an old rule (which still exists I presume on the statute books) that organised eleven aside football is banned during the month of June.

This stemmed, I believe from back in the late 1880s, when WG Grace was struggling to get his Test average up to 32.29 (funny how history can make people appear better than they really were) and the ECB were scared sh!tless that the advent of Association Football, would affect cricket.

So, a compromise was reached and no football was allowed in the month of June and early July. As stated previously stated, this still remains law today (as does the law allowing Taxi drivers to piss up against the side of their cabs and the male population of Shrewsbury is allowed to shag any Welsh boiler of his choice).

However I digress. This was put the test about ten/15 years ago when Stevenage hosted Arsenal in a pre-season on July 1. I seem to recall that both sides received a fine of some sort, but it did open the doors for clubs to begin their friendlies much earlier than before - the cynic in me suggests that had it not been a Premier League club involved then nothing may have changed.

The Sweaty Socks did have a 'Summer Cup' back in the 50s/60s, but cannot be ar$ed to Google for dates at this unearthly hour of the morning, but I am sure the title is a bit of a giveaway and to the tartan hordes, cricket was just a six-legged insect.

In reference to BB's note, yes the Herts Charity Cup is played early doors, as is the Shropshire and Lincs' versions. There must be many others.

If there is a general feeling that my suggestion has legs, then a collective email to said powers that be wouldn't go amiss.

It would be nice to see football officials in this country to become pro-active for once instead of generally re-active.

Although I think this is a good idear, we all know that the pre-season is more for the manager than the fans, so he can have a look at new players and systems. As you will remember at the beginning of this season, with all that went on, we got off to a slow start and I think alot of that was down to not being able to get in new players, and arrange the friendlies that we have in the past. Once we were able to bring in new players our season started to take off. So I say leave well alone....................If it aint broke why fix it...............
