SLOUGH Town welcomed back last season's player-coach Michael Gilkes at their third training session on Saturday. Eddie Denton, assistant manager of the Rebels last term, held the first two sessions along with trainer Kevin McGoldrick.

Gilkes announced his retirement from playing at the end of last season and, if he does not take over as manager of the Rebels, looks almost certain to remain as coach of the side.

But he is still playing his cards close to his chest because of the continued uncertainty clouding the future of Slough Town. He said: "It's just training at the moment, keeping all the guys fit. I can't really tell you any more than that because I really don't know what's going on."

Don't worry Michael, neither does anyone else.

Denton, meanwhile, confirmed that training sessions, which have been taking place on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays are up to 14 players from the original 10. Slough's first friendly of the season takes place against Northwood on Saturday, July 26 and Denton is confident that the Rebels will have a full squad.

He said: "The numbers are up now with the return of Adrian Browne and couple of guys from Slough and one from Hayes."

Not much is known of the midfield player from Hayes but Denton said: "He is nicknamed 'Chopper' and is looking very good.

"The training sessions so far have been excellent and all the players are showing a good level of fitness." One player that fans of the club have been asking about is midfielder Christian Metcalfe.

Denton said: "I have spoken to Mets and he has been training at Northwood. His goal is to play in the Ryman Premier League but he has not signed a deal yet and has not ruled out a return to Slough." Thisisslough.com caught up with Metcalfe on Tuesday this week.

He said: "I told Eddie and some of the lads last season that I wanted to play Ryman Premier League football next year.

"Northwood have spoken to me over the summer and I may have a possibility to play there next season. But the other reason for not signing with Slough is that things are still undecided about where they will be playing.

"One thing I really liked about Slough last season was the amount of fans that turned out. If Slough move to Windsor & Eton then I don't really see it being a home ground.

"But I am still in talks with Eddie, I haven't committed myself to anybody next season. If the right deal came along with Northwood, though, I would probably take it.

"I don't really want to have to hang on, thinking that Slough are going to play at Wexham Park and then at the last minute it turns out the club has to move to Windsor & Eton.

"But it's just a shame for the fans because they were terrific for the club last year."

Last week Denton confirmed his interest in the vacant managers position at Slough Town, but nothing has been taken further this week because the future of the club is still unknown. As the Observer went to press a goalkeeper had still not been found for Slough Town.

Denton said: "We will be casting a net shortly and I will be speaking to Mr Merryweather to see if he has had any approach from anyone. But we need to act fast because we have a match on July 26."

Last year's duo of Adrian Blake and Frenchman Dominique-Jean Zepherin look to have left the club. It is thought that Zepherin has returned to France, while Blake has been training with Hampton & Richmond - now managed by former Maidenhead United boss Alan Devonshire.

Rebels' fans will remember that Blake spent sometime on loan with the Magpies last term and looks to have impressed the former England and West Ham player.
