Slough v Yellow Sudbury

Recommended Posts

Sorry but didn't we ship the odd goal today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6-0, 3-0, 4-1 hardly the odd goal difference!

People just don't bother looking at the whole situation do they?

I don't care how many goals the other teams score, look at Burnham for example. Out of the top 5 teams in the league they have scored the least, Chesham have only scored slightly more than them. All that is separating the top 5 teams at the moment is how they are defensively, to which Slough have the worst defensive record.

Slough need to stop conceding the odd goal in games which they could have easily got better results in - (a) v Sutton Coldfield, (a) v Chesham, (h) v Bury, (h) v Marlow and yesterday v AFC Sudbury. Potentially that was an extra 6+ points gained by being better defensively.

What Slough can't do at the moment is grind out a result like some of the top teams they are competing against. Am I concerned though, no, because my expectation prior to the season starting was mid-table/play-offs and certainly not promotion (2 seasons I reckon). Peoples expectations have been raised and perhaps, they should instead take stock and be pleased regardless given the times before this season.

But Tom, what your not quite grasping is that IMO we probably have the best defence in the division but probably one of the weakest mid-fields when it comes to, as someone else called it, doing the dirty work i.e. when we lose the ball getting back and putting in a tackle or two.

As this is obviously the way SB wants our team to play (creative rather than defensive) we will always be vulnerable to counter attacks etc and we will concede more goals than the other top 5 teams.

The main difference with the Marlow and Sudbury games was that we allowed balls to be given away too softly on the attack and then failed to close players down when they broke, giving them far too much space and not putting in a challenge.

As was said above the likes of Sinclaire and Buchanan (top goal scorer played on the wing!) were taken out of the game by being closed down by two players every time.

Yads throw will only work if the likes of Nathan comes up for the throw.

With the forwards we have now, how many threats on goal were there yesterday and who had them?

And for those who dont like my comments - which team and supporters wanted it more yesterday?

its alright saying this player was poor and that player was poor but in the last

2 games we was alright in the first half but come the 2nd half is when we struggled

ie long high balls to the front men that were be swallowed up by the defences of both

marlow and sudbury

on rare occasions when the ball was played on the ground in attack the defences struggled

Frusrating for sure , but we are still in for a shout of a play off place , and surley this is more than most were expecting at this time of the season

we need to steady the ship of course, that was there for all to see yesterday, but it also needs the support to be there too, and the anxiety yesterday was there for all too see..we as supporters need to do our part too...

The run in is going to be hard but together we can make it a season to remember...

cheers chris sliski

Interesting point it appears SB has discarded Fenton, Jeffery and it now seems Harper in defence Jordan Sealy and Hayes in attack and replaced them with nothing better perhaps he should be looking to reinforce the midfield with perhaps a decent holding midfielder instead of areas were we don't appear to have a problem

I agree that we were poor in both halfs. Standing in the stand for both halfs it was clear to me that if it was not for Yeboah and last ditch tackles then we could have been 3 down by half time.

I do not understand the decision to play Buchanan on the wing when we had Herron on the bench and Buchanan is our top scorer. The only explanation may be that Herron was not totally fit from the bug which hit the team last week.

I think we should start with Buchanan and sippetts tonight as sippetts although only played for 5 minutes had as many shots as the rest of the team had all game.

Come on Slough lets make sure we do not fall into the position where we are fighting to stay in the playoffs. we need three points tonight and comfortably

Having not been able to watch the Rebels for numerous years due to my own commitments playing Saturdays, I watched a few a games last season when Sweetman was the manager and have seen a few this season with Bateman as manager and I have to say the difference is beyond belief, yes ok, I was there Saturday and it was poor but we're 4th in the table and we can still win the league, there is no way Hitchin, Burnham or Bury will have it all their own way, its probably better we are having a blip now with some 18 games to go than be top and have it with 4 games to go, if we make the play offs it will be a great achievement, and if we do I fully believe we will get promoted, these players know how to get out of this league, as does Bateman himself. So lets all stay positive and get behind the team, they need us at the moment. I'm no manager and I don't want to rattle anyones cage but having watched the team this season a few times I must admit that we do tend to get over run in midfield a lot, may be a lot of that is down to the ball not sticking up front long enough for the 2 central midfield players to get in position, with the players we have I can't help but think that a 3-5-2 formation would suit us better, with the 11 being:

GK - Perks or Jackson (Not a lot between the 2 of them)

CB - Sweeney, Bowden-Haase, Yeboah

RWB - Sinclair

CM - Clark, Kean, Edgeworth

LWB - Murphy or Herron (Again, not a lot between the 2 players)

CF - Buchanon and Sippetts or Sonner (I just think Martin looks like he needs a rest and may be carrying an injury, he must have those cycle shorts on for a reason!!!)

Again, we're doing ok and I don't want the above to cause an argument, as Bateman knows what he is doing and 4-4-2 has served us very well so far but onwards and upwards, we're going to be fine...

I totally agree with that MR. we do get run over in midfield and I think we can benefit a lot from having 3 in the middle of the park. I rate Edgeworth as going forward a bit too to support the front two. I would personally pick murphy over herron as he has been the best this season. I would play sippetts and buchanan as I think they are the two most likely to score.

NBH would benefit from having an extra CB when he comes forward too.

The only thing I dont agree with is that if we get into the playoffs I do not think we will go up. I think all of the other teams currently there would beat us!!

Am I right in saying that Bateman wanted to play 3-5-2 but when Stevenson left (without even playing!!!) he abandoned that plan??? I'd even be half inclined to see Dean Harper in the midfield just to protect the defence (even if I do think he would get a lot of yellow cards)!!! I think, there is no way Bateman will change formation now though, so Harper and Egdeworth could combine well together, if we did play 3 in the middle, Harper, Edgeworth and Clark/Kean would work really well together, Harper doing the dirty work, Kean/Clark spraying the ball about and Edgeworth playing just off the front 2!!!

Thinking about it, I agree with you on Murphy, I think he's been very consistent when I've seen him play, if I'm honest I've probably only seen 10 games this season but I think the 2 full backs have been our best players every time I've seen the rebels, I actually think Sweeney could be playing a lot higher standard than he is, he gets us out of a lot of trouble each game!!!

We'll agree to disagree on the last point haha, I just think the other teams will hit a blip and if we're the form team we could win the play offs!!! Its time to play Sippetts and Buchanon together every time they are available for that to happen though!!!

Yep definitely. Sippetts and buchanan could prove to be an integral part if we are to pull hitchin back in. I am worried about our next three games resulting in no wins. Please prove me wrong Slough

TBH on Saturday I don't really know what formation we were playing. On paper it was 4-3-3 with Buchannon, Martin and Sonner up front. When the game got going it seems our top scorer Buchannon was asked play wide and to do a lot of the donkey work, sometimes up front, sometimes in midfield and sometimes doing some defensive work.

For our top scorer to play this type of role is absolute nonsense. Tonight I think we have to revert back to Heron and Sincs as the two wide players with Buchannon and one other as the front pairing.

Reading Rebel: Steve Bateman says can you give him a call to discuss team selection.

Ok so my team for tonight would be something such as the following:-

Jacko

Sweeney NBH Yads Murphy

Sincs Clark Edgeworth Dwaine Clarke

Sippetts Buchanan

I would then have herron, hayes, martin, harper and perks on the bench.

The very first sub i would think about making would be to bring Dean harper on as he will give 100% so NBH and Yads definitely have competition for places.

I think Dwaine clarke has looked good when he comes on whereas herron is either very good or crap lol
