Chances This Saturday?

Danny West

Morning, my names Danny West (I run the official Mangotsfield United website and also the unofficial forum "Mango's Mouth").

I'm travelling to the match by train on Saturday leaving at 10.01am, basically I'm going to need to know what chance there is of the match going ahead as hard frosts and perhaps snow could be a problem?

Any information would be very much appreciated.

Snow is unlikely, we had maybe 1mm yesterday which was gone an hour later and I doubt we'll get significantly more. But frosts could be an issue: it's around freezing every night round here into the weekend, and an early inspection would possibly fail even though it would probably be OK by 3pm.

Anyone know what time the pitch inspection is likely on Saturday?

We've had colder weather and it still be on. I'm sure it'll be on as long as certain parts of the pitch are patched up which i'm sure they will be before kick off.

Are you bringing your darts with you?!

Danny, if we get hard frosts or snow there may well be a problem as you said but it's a bit hard to make a call 2 days before the game ! If it was being played tonight it would be on but it only takes an hour of heavy snow to cover the pitch !

Obviously I appreciate a call cannot be made two days prior to the fixture, what would be appreciated is a "heads up" sometime on Saturday morning if at all possible (before 9.45am), if need be I'll leave my mobile number with someone?

As for the darts, I personally won't be playing but we should have a few up for a bit of darts.

The lowest temp forecast between now and Saturday at the moment is -2, so that'll have to chnage if it's going to be called off.

The pitch will look like Farmer Giles' potato field after he'd dug up the crop but I'm sure it'll be playable.

With regards to the match being played it sounds positive, I'm aware of the pitch situation after speaking to an official from Gosport on Tuesday night who showed me a photo of the pitch taken when they played Bedfont Green last Saturday.

How much will a cab from Windsor Central Station to the ground cost and what time does your bar open?

I would recommend the Carpenters arms as a stop off between station and ground...best beer in Windsor.
From the station, walk up towards the castle, past the statue of Queen Vic, and it,s 1st right down Market street.

There's a cab rank outside the castle. Shouldn't cost more than a fiver to the ground.

Have a good one..

What happened there???

Well, if you will go recommending people get cabs rather than walking as far as the Criterion (and then getting a cab! :))... and indeed if you insist on reading the board at unearthly morning hours... clearly it wasn't awake.

& Danny, if you're coming from Windsor Central, then once you come off the train and walk to the platform exit, either

- go straight on through the covered shopping centre, bear slightly right through the shops and up the hill and you'll see the castle in front of you with the cab rank before it on the other side of the road. There's plenty of food choices to the left, opposite the castle. Or turn right to the statue, go past and left, then the Carpenters' Arms is down the first cobbled street on the right and is also a decent lunch spot. Probably easiest to then take a taxi from the castle rank.

or

- turn right and exit the covered area via the steps down, continue through the open shopping centre and until you can leave this down the street on the left and you'll come to a main shopping street, Peascod Street. Go right to where the rod forks. On the left fork, there's a Wetherspoons and also a Subway: or go right and follow the shops to the end of the main shopping area, and there are various lunch alternatives as you walk, and when the pedestrian part finishes there's a pub on each corner. Crosses' Corner (on your right) also serves decent food assuming the chef is in, the Criterion (on your left) does fine beer: either is also a good spot for asking for a cab to be ordered for you to the ground.

Personally I'd recommend eating at Crosses', then going across the street to the Cri, have a few pints there (as time permits) and then ask the bar person if they would call a taxi for you at between 2-2:30pm.

You boys are clearly forgetting the big darts match before kick off. I'd suggest a cab will cost about a fiver and you can get them from outside the castle. The Duke of york is now the nearest pub to to the ground and is about a 2 min walk from the football club. Depending on what time you get into windsor i'd suggest there due to its location but if you do have an hour or two to kill then the pubs outside the castle.

Whatever you do dont go to the criteion. It's bloody expensive for round here and as the pubs we went to round your area were cheap you'd most likely die of shock! For the cheapest crapest lager (fosters) its £3.60 now!! A shame as we used to always end up there after matches home or away!

Why is it every time anybody says they are arriving by train we automatically assume their top priority is Pub information!

Anyway as has already been noted the Carpenters Arms is probably the best pub in town. If you’re into historical landmarks then check it out as it’s opposite the shortest street in Britain "Queen Charlotte Street" and the famous Crooked House. Also there is a big castle thing somewhere in the vicinity. There are 4 pubs in the Cobbled streets area so you can do a mini pub crawl before grabbing a cab to the ground.

If you decide to walk to the ground there is a decent pub called the Trooper about halfway between the station and ground.

Thanks for the information fella's, I'd imagine we'll had towards one of the Wetherspoons and then get a cab to the ground for about 1.30pm for the darts re-match.

As for drinking, yes a few pints will most definitely be downed!!!

Danny, if you simply want a Wetherspoons I'd say exit the train station and turn left when you see Elizabeth's rather large house. Walk about 150 metres and you'll see "The Kind & Castle"... That's the "better" if we can say that of the two Spoons in Windsor. If you manage to find the other you'll be drinking with the local alcoholics!

But don't forget to hae only one in Spoons before heading to our Club House for the darts competition... It's going to be like bleeding Lakeside in there before kick off!!!!

Bleeding is right. With the stray darts all over the place there could be a good chance of that!! smilewinkgrin.gif

Somehow i've never been into the Spoons by Liquid. Dont think i'm missing much!

Spoons are alright for what they are, on our numerous previous aways on the train over previous seasons a Spoons is always sought out at some stage. I'm not one for walking miles and miles, and I'm not a pub snob. A pub within five minutes walk is fine by me BUT it must sell CIDER and NOT STRONGBOW or BLACKTHORN!!!!

Cider like that is hard to come by round here!

Actually the Wetherspoons is the best bet there: serves a different cider on draft and it's got a good range of bottles as well.
