Who would you keep?!?!?

Here's a question for next year, if we were to go up (hypothetically obviously) which of our current first 11 and squad would you say could cut it in a top 10 performing team (which is what I guess our second aim, after staying up next year, would be)?

 

I ask this as I bet there are some players who might look better at a higher level on better pitches and a different style of play.

Having seen one or two sides from the league above play this season i personally think the current squad will be able to more than survive. Having said that there are a couple of players who would have work on their fitness levels to make it at a higher level. Although the defence has been exellent this season more cover is needed there and the centre of midfield will definitly need strenghthening. The strikers should do alright although i think Justin Bennett from Gosport would be a major plus! He's the best goalscorer in the current division by a mile! Of the current squad i think Fagan, Butler, Chandarim, Smith, Chennels, Thomas and both Parsons will be more than good enough but most of the rest of the squad should be ok as well.

Funny how you missed out one of best players in Bruce, he has been a more than capeable replacement for Coyne, he rarely makes mistakes and can also produce the brilliant (thorugh ball for Victor to beat Totton and that goal against North Leigh to name but a few).

 

I agree most of the team would be able to play, cover for the defence is necessary beyond doubt and central midfield requires cover as well.

 

I would rate Chenns up there as best striker in the division and if we go up he will prob score 20-30 again next season.

 

I don't think I 've seen enough of Kristen or Smith yet to make a decision, both look okay but would like to see a three or four game run before I decide.

 

Joe needs to up his game, he gives us width and pace but needs to be more agressive, he CAN do it but needs to do it regularly and for 90 mins.

 

But i think we will survive okay if we go up, just wondered if I had a rose tinted blinkered view of my team, it can happen you know!!!!

After 4 years in this league I'll just be delighted to return the Premier division (IF it happens). I reckon the current squad has more than enough quality in it to compete effectively in the league above.

 

I would keep everyone from this season as I think they have earned to right (so far this season anyway) to prove themselves at a higher level.

 

I remember a few years back when we got promoted from Ryman Div 2 into Div 1 there were a lot of personnel changes during the summer which seemed to affect team moral and it didn't really work out. It didn’t help that most of the players that came in were no better than the players they replaced that were deemed not good enough for a higher level. It was no real surprise when we started the season with no wins from the first 16 games! It ultimately cost Byron Walton his job which was a shame as he had done a really good job in getting promotion on a tight budget but ultimately he paid the price for his lack of faith in the team that had won him promotion.

 

Realistically IF we did get promoted we would need a slightly bigger squad. We seem to be well covered for forwards and wingers but lacking in numbers in the centre of midfield and at the back. A couple of seasoned premier division players to play at the back and in midfield would suffice; they wouldn't necessarily be replacing anyone in the current squad just adding a bit of depth to it.

 

Whatever happens I'm sure the Colonel & Jim will know what they are doing.

Not a pointless thread Woody but one of discussion and opinion, that is the point of this chat board facility. I would agree with Mrs Cat and i have faith that Keith and Jim will do what is necessary, but always interesting to see how we view the strength of our squad.
