Football League Flavour to Essex Senior Cup Draw

Two Coca-Cola Football League sides could lock horns in the semi-finals of the Essex Senior Cup supported by BBC Essex after Dagenham & Redbridge were paired with either Colchester United or Maldon Town in Wednesday’s draw at the station’s headquarters in New London Road, Chelmsford.

John Still’s Daggers will observe the rearranged fixture between the U’s and Ryman League Division One North club Maldon with interest as they look to negotiate the last round before a prestigious final, while AFC Hornchurch know they will either restore rivalries with Chelmsford City or neighbours Aveley in the last four. City knocked them out of the FA Trophy after a replay earlier in the campaign and the Millers were involved in two exciting Ryman League Premier Division fixtures over the festive period.

Hornchurch earned their place in the final four with a hard-earned 1-0 victory away at bottom club Waltham Abbey from the same division. Striker Jo Flack got the all-important goal on 64 minutes for the Urchins, who won the competition back in 2006/07 with a landmark success over Great Wakering Rovers at Roots Hall. Manager Colin McBride will be keen to triumph again and supplement their play-off charge.

The Daggers, meanwhile, were also slender single-goal victors against Essex Senior League outfit Hullbridge Sports, who had emerged through three rounds to make it to the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium. Their brave run was finally ended by a 58th-minute strike from Wesley Thomas as the hosts improved on their Essex Senior Cup progress of last season where they fell at the quarter-final hurdle.

Ben Fryer from BBC Essex pulled the home sides from the bag and Essex County Football Association Chief Executive, Phil Sammons, was responsible for the away teams while Robert Craven from the ECFA Cups & Competitions Department watched-on to ensure the proceedings ran smoothly. New dates for the postponed Colchester United vs Maldon Town and Chelmsford City vs Aveley quarter-final ties are yet to be fixed, but they will be announced on http://www.nonleague.co.uk as soon as they’re known
