W&E 5-1 Hungerford

Rother

Recommended Posts

Dynamic performance in the last quarter of the game after it had looked like we just weren't going to get the goals our possession might have justified.

Although I felt 5-1 flattered us a bit (contradicting myself somewhat) we really could have had another 3 or 4 as a number of chances were cleared off the line so I suppose Hungerford couldn't complain too much.

Having said that (and somewhat contradiciting myself again!) 1. was that really a free-kick that resulted in the 2nd goal and 2. did that 3rd goal really cross the line. My answers would be 1. don't think so and 2. definitely not.

Hey ho, we played some great stuff and Jake Parsons is looking like a superstar at this level plus Rico's and Pearce's cameos are adding an excellent extra dimension in the closing stages.

Nathan Jack stepped in well and looked a virtual identikit to Victor Osobu.

We are looking very very good.

(Shame but hardly a shock that Totton beat Bracknell 9-0.)

1 was a very generous free kick, we'd seen much worse not given - I think it was for holding, or maybe even obstruction, but it was an unusual decision either way...

Ball definitely crossed the line, though, it must have been a good foot behind - if the goalie had kept proper hold he'd maybe just have kept it on the line but after fumbling it like that it was comfortably over.

& I know just what you mean about the score sort of flattering us, goals in the 85, 89th and 90th+ minute do that... but we had so many attacks just kept out or knocked wide, whereas Rob only really had two saves to make and a few collections, other than that I don't think they made much.

Meanwhile, we're still two points clear of Totton even if they do win all three games in hand; Paulton drew so that's a solid 17 point lead on them, and with Bridgwater and VT FC both 20 points(!) behind us even their four games each aren't going to get them too close... it's all very promising.

Definite free kick. The defender clipped Jakes heel and for once the linesman on the bench side finally got something right.

As fr the ball crossing the line couldn't say from where I was.

As for the keeper, very lucky to have been on the pitch at the end. Kicked the ball at the linesman after the second goal, which he should have been booked, and possibly sent off for, and then he does the same again when the lino signals the goal that may not have been a goal.

Overall a good performance in difficult circumstances and a very big thank you to all of those supporters that turned up this morning to fork the pitch.

I was standing behind the centre of the goal at ground level and I am absolutely certain that the ball did not cross the line. I compared notes with the fella I was stood next to who agreed 100%.

I actually doubt ANY of the ball was over the line.

I've just got a new pair of specs - can I recommend a good optician dansilk? ;)

We were in the stand behind the home dugout, up a metre or two, right by the access path to the pitch: so a clear view of the goal and no doubt at all. And that's from me (season ticket), neighbour (occasional visitor) and neighbour's friend (first visit) so a decent range of partisanship. The initial fumble looked to be above the goal-line, give or take, but after the goalie dropped the ball it went back and was well inside the goalmouth before he reclaimed it. It did help having the extra height to see it as there really wasn't any doubt.

And obviously this didn't help fathoming the cause for the free kick, but I suppose we had Jake and most of the fouling player in the way.

Any optical aids shoudl be donated to the ref, who missed five Hungerford handballs (including two clear penalty calls) and one of ours, but spotted the one by us which had no impact on play but where we'd continued into a scoring position...

Somebody said that it couldn't be done,

But he with a chuckle replied

That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one

Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin

On his face. If he worried he hid it.

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn't be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that;

At least no one ever has done it";

But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,

And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,

Without any doubting or quiddit,

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn't be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,

There are thousands to prophesy failure;

There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,

The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,

Just take off your coat and go to it;

Just start to sing as you tackle the thing

That "cannot be done," and you'll do it.”

What can i say apart from that was very good!!

Hit the posts, cleared off the line a few times, 16 goals in our last three home games. Rico shouting "HATRIIIIIIICK" A jack debut goal, Jake parsons putting himself in contention for a plane trip to South Africa in the summer, being called groundsman by the hungerford physio, the champange we drank in the stag, the amount of coffe and tea and red bull i drank to keep myself awake after an all nighter friday, getting punched where it hurts most by one of the twins, the fact the game was on are all things i wont forget in a hurry And Fagan's 'Shovel' celebration ( Thanks! Meant alot!)

Portsmouth and their 500 helpers have nowt on us.

:97:

Honestly, honestly, the initial fumble was a good 2 or 3 feet away from the line. Extra height, view from the dug out, pah! We were about 10 feet away from the line and it was never in.

First post on here and wanted to add my thanks to those people who worked and worked to get the game on quite a feat when you consider how the weather was on thursday. signthankspin.gif

I have to admit i wasn't at the time convinced with the substitution but as soon as Marcus settled down he gave everything. It seemed we needed badly someone to hold the ball up and and muscle their way through. Before that i feared the worst when they equalised but this team of ours never put their heads down and just brushed Hungerford aside with a marvelous display, good teamwork and on the whole we deserved the scoreline. North leigh up next i daren't look any further ahead.

I was behind the goal and i thought it was in. Looked like he fumbled it over the line too me.

5-1 didnt flatter us. People are only saying that because it was a grandstand finish but we had at least 4 or 5 excellent chances well before then. Besides...last time i looked the game was 90 mins and not 80! Our fitness really told in those final 10.

The Hungerford view is up... oddly enough, they don't seem hugely happy with the match!

http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/hungerfordtownfc/?primary=senior&secondary=matchreports&team_id=11575&report_id=45754

Windsor increased their lead at the top of the table, with a win by a flattering margin which did not do justice to our efforts, but two controversial goals. and three goals in the last 5 minutes gave a false score-line to what was an excellent game under tricky conditions. Credit the Windsor efforts which enabled the game to be played, although the pitch was very wet and heavy and liberally coated with sand.

The home side looked the more dangerous, but we defended well, although we had a let-off when Bruce Wilson hit the post and appeared to have survived the first half when, well into injury time, the ball was luckily deflected to Nathan Jack who drove home the opening goal.

The second half continued in the same manner, with the powerful home side ploughing through the heavy surface, but our defence still holding their own, until a double substitution midway through the half brought almost immediate dividends, Alex Green heading in a cross from Richard Witt to level the scores after 68 minutes, but only 3 minutes later, Windsor retook the lead with a controversial goal, when Kevin Halliday's tackle was wrongly penalised by the linesman's flag and Andrew Fagan headed home from the resultant free-kick.

Five minutes from the end, the home side made certain of the points when Michael Chennells shot was adjudged to have crossed the line, much to the disgust of the Hungerford defenders, again the linesman making the vital decision.

Marcus Richardson came on and rubbed salt in the wounds by scoring in the 89th and 90th minute to give Windsor a win they no doubt deserved, but by an extremely flattering margin.

They probably won't be inviting that linesman to their next Xmas party...

All has been said on here about the game, but one thing...

How annoying the Hungerford manager and his assistant manager were throughout the game. I decided to sit in the main stand for the first half. However I decided the second half would not be spent there due to the constant moaning by the staff from the Hungerford bench. Constantly from the Hungerford bench you could hear "LINO.... LINO.... LINO, WE DON'T WANT FAVOURS, JUST WANT YOU TO DO YOUR JOB"... Then if he took no notice they would continuously shout "SKIPPER, SKIPPER, THANKS SKIPPER" to Butler throughout the match.

The pair of them had nothing constructive to comment on... They just talked [****!!****] throughout!

THEY WERE PROPER DOING MY HEAD IN!!!!!!!!!!!

From the opposite side of the pitch where we were it was definatly in, the keeper had to reach behind the line to claw it out.

Great to see such a spirited display & once Hungerford drew level, it acted like a second reminder of the chances already missed or not given & certainly did the trick.

Brilliant team effort once again.

Great piece of vid Film. Got any more?

Oh well, seems like I'm outvoted on the whether it crossed the line debate!!

Thanks Rother, I missed the first goal from nathan Jack but captured the second goal from Andrew fagan as well as the Marcus Richardsons goals, will try and upload them later.

Behind the goal the debate raged, split about 50-50 as to whether it had gone in or not. Definitely over or not even near, quite a range really considering how close most of us were. I personally thought it was in, I guess we will never know but we deserved the win. the keeper was a good laugh and played well and the onloy blot on his copybook was his reaction to the "debated" goal. I think he genuinely believed he had kept it out and wasn't just having a hissy fit for the sake of it.

I can see how hungerfords report could come out that way, they state we deserved to win, true. they say the free kick for our second wass debateable, possibly, our third goal never crossed the line, debateable. But we scored three other goals and hit the post four times, had at least two one on ones and the keeper made a few good saves. they also cleared a few off the line (good defending) so from their perspective the two late goals may be considered flattering. I think we deserved the victory and the margin over the 90 mins, a very good team performance, and didn't Rico look good when he came on.

Would also like to say a big well done to all the fans who turned up to get he pitch match worthy, really hard work but soooo worth it come 4.45. Brilliant to see the management team out there with forks, the club is really moving forward and this is evident from the effort of everyone at the club to get a very important game played. If we hadn't played it would have given Totten a boost so makes it even more worth while.

And Fagan's celebration will be difficult to match, top quality!!

My little lad got Richardson's 2nd one on vid but it's a bit shaky and I don't know how to upload to You Tube...!

He enjoyed trying to capture the key moents on stills and then experimented with the vid towards the end, so I expect he'll be trying again in future. Any tips on uploading will be appreciated!
