Saints 0 - 4 Gillingham

Recommended Posts

A good workout for the Saints who never really troubled the Gills goal but competed well in midfield.

Miguel de Souza caused a few problems for the Gills defence in the opening stages but the visitors went ahead after 24 minutes when Ryan Moran's mishit clearance fell to Paul Shaw who passed to David Perpetuini who shot home via Wilmot's body into the far top corner.

Gills went two up ten minutes later when Tommy Johnson slotted the ball past Wilmot from wide on the right and on the stroke of half time Shaw made it 3-0 with a strike from 12 yards.

Two totally different teams contested the second half but Saints attacks were few and far between and the Gills wrapped it up in the 84th minute when Danny Spiller side-footed home from close range after the ball had come back off the crossbar.

Good performances from the new boys but better cohesion must be found between the midfield and the front two.

Now you're asking!

First half: Wilmot, Gledhill, Naylor, Moran, Campbell, Oakes, Graham, Hyatt, McDonnell, De Souza, Smith.

Second half: bit hazy by now, something to do with the half-time Grolsch and the heat probably, but I think Wilmot, Oakes and De Souza stayed on, Castle, Martin, Glynn and Gary Wraight (!) came on, don't know about the other four, though the no.11 looked useful.

The fundamental problem was that it was 95 degrees in the shade on Saturday and there's nothing anyone can do about that. For once, I was happy to watch, rather than play.

Tomlinson didn't play as he has a slight injury. Elsgood and the new boys showed promising touches but Gillingham were always in control. The report in the NLP made it sound more competitive than I saw it but then, what do you expect from these hacks. Homer and Awayday should be back from the Caribbean soon.

There were a couple of new stewards who looked as if they knew what they were doing.

The matchday programme would have benefitted from proof-reading.

The team wore the Baldock light blue in the second half. It was very hot so it will probably need a wash before the Reserves play in it [soon, I hope].

I never pass on rumours but I heard that Gary Crawshaw might be hanging up his boots. Either that or he was a little upset that he didn't win the web-site's Player of the Season Ferrari despite walking the vote in the Supporters Club PotS thing. When is Jon Challinor coming back from the USA?

The new shirts were on display in the club shop. Replicas should be available very soon. They look much better with the club crest and the sponsors name. I prefer the away shirt.

It's good to be back.

Hi Webbo.

So it was his disappointment over the web-site's PotS Ferrari, then.

Don't have a go at me, mate. You're the one who sold the message board to Canvey Island. Was it really £5million?

Hi Charlie.

You are better informed from a prone position than when you are upright, Charlie. Get well soon!
