"Icy blast set to be millennium's

greatest wildlife disaster"

Blimey, a week and a half of snow and you get this sort of Daily Mail style headline.

It's January.....It's the middle of winter......It's going to be a bit draughty around your curlews.

I think nature, after millions of years of evolution, has learned how to deal with a sharp frost and a sprinkling of snow. Natural selection an' all that.

Having said that, I do keep plenty of food out on my bird-table and I've got the fattest robin in Hertfordshire coming to my garden every day. The greedy git has more chance of dying of obecity than the cold. Fat sod.

I think the problem is that due to the amount of cover birds just cannot get to many food sources.

At the moment it isn't much of a problem but if the weather continues as it is then it could be.

Many birds migrate to the UK in the winter because of the warm conditions we have usually compared to many other countries on the mainland.

Birds like little egret who have spread across the uk in the last ten years as we have got warmer must be wondering what the heck is going on,saw 3 in the ingrebourne the other day, they just looked lost!!!

Robins are fat bastards, greedy and get the food before many others, violent little buggers as well

LOL,alot of geese come here from the artic tundra as their food is all frozen for 6 months a year.

Other birds like waxwings come here in good numbers some year when their berry crops don't materialise, think they like elderberrys but if there is a bad crop in scandanavia in the winter then you get a few turn up on the east coast looking for food

Also you would be surprised how littlke of the birds in this country actually spend the whole year here

even common birds like tgits and starlings, many come here in the winter because of good conditions for them

Andy, don't know who removed your post,i thought it was quite funny for you!!!

As far as I'm concerned those Canadian Geese can bugger off home, flying [censored]-factories they are!

I don't remember a raft of breeds dying out after the 1963 big freeze (yes I do recall it bat ears, before your start), so let the pesky fvckers fend for themselves.

By the way, do Magpies naff off south during the winter? Not seen many around of late...the silence is marvellous....

Buzzardboy, I applaud you for starting this thread in defence of your feathered friends, but I fear it has taken a rather disturbing turn for the worse.

Sir, I wouldn't claim to be a great expert on ornithology like youreself, I have, however, watched an inordinate amount of Spring Watch with Bill Oddie recently. I have also taken a very keen interest (some would say too much) in Kate Humble and her green tits over the last few years so feel competent enough to offer some sound advice.

Maybe my thinking is unorthodox, but I would suggest a controlled culling of all non-indigenous species of bird entering these shores, thus enabling the natives easier access to food, nest boxes and all the benefits that go with it.

Now, I know the sexual tension between the dashing Chris Packham and the delightful Katie is rather disappointing and, quite frankly unpleasant, nevertheless, this shouldn't detract from Packham's more extreme views on wildlife and I am sure he would concur with my opinion.

His views on the great panda, although controversial, were widely discussed and greatly respected. His close proximity to Katie does upset me though.

Chris Packham's attack on pandas was both vile and unwarranted.

The man is quite obviously a psychopath and therefore, in my opinion, a poor choice to replace the knowledgeable, yet deeply irritating Bill Oddie on springwatch.

As for birds, i think the idea is that they gorge themselves stupid in the run up to winter, so that they don't have to go out when the weather gets bad.

A bit like Americans really.

Lets all hope that the superb Bill Oddie is fit and well again, and returns to 'Spring Watch' this year.

To be quite honest, Packham gets right up my nose, metaphorically speaking that is !
