Elliot Styles made a surprise return from injury whilst Jamie Dormer was still suspended. Hornchurch kicked towards the clubhouse end of the ground in the first half, and started confidently when Billy Coyne sent Wayne Gray away on the right. Wayne crossed the ball and Jo Flack’s first time shot brought a good save from Ollie Morris-Sanders. The referee was well known to Hornchurch supporters, and when Billy Coyne was unjustly booked in the third minute, many wondered if this was going to be red-card day. Urchins continued to dominate and Jonathan Hunt exchanged passes with Gray before Sam Holloway tackled to concede the first of fifteen corners for Hornchurch. Mark Janney played the ball short to Hunt whose centre was headed away by Michael Alaile. For a time it was the home side who dominated as Urchins tried to adjust to the heavy pitch, which has little time to recover as two teams share the ground. A free kick from Steve Butterworth was headed over by Ryan Edgar and a good run by Junior Dadson saw the ball played into the path of Edgar whose shot was well saved by Darren Behcet. A dipping centre from Ryan Doyle was headed out by Ronnie Fletcher for a corner and Butterworth’s corner was punched away by Behcet, and the ball was played back to Dadson, who slipped the ball sideways to Nicky Symons whose shot was partially blocked by Mark Goodfellow, allowing Behcet to save comfortably. Hornchurch quickly regained control and Michael Spencer sent Jo Flack away, and Doyle turned the shot out for a corner. Hunt sent the ball over and Flack’s shot was deflected out for another corner, Hunt again took the kick and Elliot Styles headed narrowly over the bar. At the other end a Butterworth corner reached Holloway and his shot was blocked by Andy Tomlinson, who played the ball up to Michael Spencer and thence forward to Wayne Gray. Wayne made ground and crossed the ball into the path of Jo Flack who cut inside and his shot cannoned back off the post, before being scrambled clear. Tow Butterworth corners were comfortably cleared, by Ronnie Fletcher and Mark Goodfellow, and then Michael Spencer made a good run through the middle to slot the ball inside to Hunt whose shot brought an excellent save from Morris-Sanders. Urchins ended the half pressing strongly. Billy Coyne sent Wayne Gray away and his shot was deflected for another corner. Hunt floated the ball over, Mark Janney played it short to Gray who drove the ball hard into the goalmouth where Morris-Sanders just beat Goodfellow to the ball, saving on the line. Back surged the Urchins in stoppage time and Wayne Gray was scythed down. No yellow card, just a free kick – yet seconds earlier Andy Tomlinson had been booked for what appeared to be a perfectly legitimate tackle -, and Hunt’s shot was turned around the post for a corner. Hunt took the kick and Morris-Sanders gathered. Urchins started the second half strongly, and forced three corners, all taken by Hunt. Two were punched away by Morris-Sanders and the third was hammered away to safety by Holloway. But disaster struck in the 51st minute, when Butterworth won a hotly disputed free kick, about thirty yards out. Butterworth had taken a lot of the set pieces and once again lurked, but it was Holloway who stepped up and fired the ball through the wall and straight at Darren Behcet. As Darren went to gather the ball, it bobbled on the bumpy surface, and rebounded off Darren’s chest into the path of a surprised and highly delighted MARTIN TUOHY who stabbed the ball into the net, to the delight of the six home supporters packed behind the goal, whilst their lone supporter in the excellent grandstand did what appeared to be a war dance (it was later established that he had spilled some hot coffee over himself). Urchins now had a mountain to climb – in more ways than one, as the Aveley pitch has a steep slope and Urchins were kicking up the slope. But for a short time Aveley threatened to increase their lead when Doyle’s free kick was touched short to Butterworth whose shot was deflected for a corner by Tomlinson. Butterworth took the kick and Fletcher cleared. Tuohy was booked, to ironic cheers from the massed Urchins following, as balls began to sail out into the fields over the far side as the home side tried to hang on to their lead. Duane Jackman came on to give three up front, and he was quickly in the action when he raced through to win a corner, but Morris-Sanders rose well to gather Hunt’s inswinging kick. Gray was put clear on the right and another corner resulted, with the keeper once again holding the cross well. Styles moved up to combine with Jackman whose shot was turned around the post for yet another corner. Hunt this time picked out Elliot Styles who hammered his shot just past the post, the post in question being the corner flag. A disgraceful incident then followed when Andy Tomlinson was left prone on the ground and appeared to be kicked whilst on the ground. The referee decided to stroll over and investigate and the end result was a free kick to Hornchurch, and not a sign of a card of any colour. Shortly afterwards Micky Symons was booked, once again to ironic cheers from the Urchins following. Ben Boyce came on and there were now four up front, as the home side hammered ball after ball into oblivion, scattering the horses grazing happily in the field beyond. Flack played Boyce through and his shot skimmed the cross bar. Spencer to Flack, and another corner resulted. Hunt floated the ball over and Morris-Sanders punched the ball out for another corner. Hunt again and this time it was Alaile who managed to scramble the ball around the post. The third corner inside a minute was eventually booted deep up the field to give the home side some respite. Despite the constant time wasting, despite the many stoppages, mainly for treatment to Urchins players, the referee signalled just four minutes stoppage time, and with Urchins committed to attack a loose ball was chased upfield and Andy Tomlinson shielded it back to Behcet. What happened next was total farce – the Aveley player, caught off balance, fell to the ground, and the whistle blew. Instead of the anticipated yellow card for the home player, which would have been very harsh in its own right, it was a straight red for Andy, who left the field in total disbelief. And to make matters worst, the free kick was dropped by Darren Behcet and he only just grabbed the ball as Tuohy homed in. Urchins threw everyone forward up the steep slope, and a long punt upfield by Behcet saw Boyce clear, only for Morris-Sanders to turn the shot around the post. Hunt took the corner and the ball was returned back from the right into the middle, where Jo Flack was scythed down – penalty. Up stepped JONATHAN HUNT to calmly crash the ball into the – justice was done, and the 250 Urchins made their delight known to all and sundry. Seven seconds later the whistle went for full time, and Aveley had managed to hang on for a point. http://www.afchornch...09/match39.html
