A quick question about the Official Site

When you view the Official site, is there an excessive amount of white space down either side of the content?

Whenever I am playing around with things such as the squad pages, a lot of the things that I try are restricted by the amount of usable space. Since Niki designed the site I am pretty sure the average monitor size has become bigger and it would be possible to widen the content area without too many people being affected.

On my monitor there is about 3.5 inches of white space either side of the main content so there would be plenty of space to increase the size. Does anyone view the site on a monitor that would struggle if the content area was bigger? If so, how much white space do you have down the sides at the moment? This way I can find the best size for everyone.

Steve, I also have a lot of white space, 3.5 inches to the left and about 5 inches to the right (this is a wide monitor). Not wishing to display my IT ignorance but does it depend on the screen resolution settings?

screen resolutions can affect things I have my screen at 1280 x 1024, which means I do get large spaces as the size of everything on the screen is smaller. If I reduce to 800 x 600 then I have no space at all, in fact the site does not all fit on my screen. What you will find is with there being many more flat screens now, their native resolution (the size they look best at) is a lot higher than the older C.R.T. monitors.

Sorry for geekiness, I hope it helps.

I have about 2 inches either side of the content. (God, I hope this conversation isn't being monitored)!

I must admit, I did not use 'resolution' in my original post for fear of confusing people.

I think the site design is about 4 years old so dates back to the days when 800x600 was probably the most common monitor resolution, and that is also the size I designed websites to at the time. I am not sure how many people use that resolution (or a lesser one) these days and if it would be possible to increase the content area it would make the site more functional.

The ideal plan (look away now Wellsie) would be to have a fluid width site that would adjust to the size of someones monitor/resolution and would always fit on a screen. The downside of that would be to make sure the actual content itself did not look disjointed on anyones screen could be tricky.

This is all hypothetical at the moment, just something I have noticed from any updates/changes I have worked on. Maybe at some time I will put a few drafts online and see how they show up.

Steve
