11th in the league not good enough?

I can see it ending in tears over there if they are departing of managers so often.

McCarthy Leaves Truro

by Andy White

Monday, December 7, 2009

SEAN MCCARTHY has left his position as manager of Zamaretto Premier club Truro City.

The former Bradford and Oldham striker departed by mutual consent following the Tigers' 7-2 defeat at Stourbridge on Saturday.

McCarthy, 42, took over at Treyew Road in the summer of 2008 and enjoyed fantastic success in his first season, leading the club to the Southern League Division One South & West title.

However, the Tigers have struggled for consistency at Step 3 this term and currently find themselves in a mid-table position of 11th.

Saturday's crushing loss to the Glassboys proved to be the final straw for chairman Kevin Heaney and he and McCarthy decided it best to part company.

A club statement said: "Following discussions with Mr Sean McCarthy it has been agreed by mutual consent that as of today's date December 7 2009, Sean will no longer continue in his role as first team manager.

"The club would like to thank Sean for all his efforts on behalf of Truro City football club and wishes him every success for the future."

Chris Webb will take on the role of caretaker-manager until a permanent successor to McCarthy is appointed.

Looks like their power-crazed chairman has lost patience, they could end up back in the South and West!

This was always likely to happen given the amount of success they have achieved over the past 3 seasons or so.

Most of their fans are used to seeing them winning week in week out and aren’t used to seeing their team lose too often; hence patience was always going to be thin on the ground down there.

IF Windsor or indeed Slough gets promoted to the Premier this season I'm sure we'd both be delighted if next year we were 11th in the table going into the Christmas Period.

If I were a Truro fan it is the Chairman I would be worried about. He wants to make Truro a football league side in the next five years or so I think it was. He must be coming to terms with the reality of that ambition. Look at AFC Wimbledon, I am not a great fan of them, but I totally respect the set up and the way it is run. they make their money through the turnstyles and have a truly fantatsic support for that level. They are financially sound and attracted good players and managers to progress through the leagues (and it took them longer than they thought). Truro will not get the gates that Wimbledon get, that is down to geography, demographics and history (Wimbledon's fan base was already there).

I wonder how long before he realises it is his money and only his money supporting the club and that he probably won't get them to the football league (not in the near future anyway). If he pulls out the club is stuffed, the fans must feel really nervous if they enter mediocracy and end up mid table this season and looks like they may next, could get a bit scary.

Can everyone but them see the train wreck about to happen...........

They're very different to other clubs purely because of their geography. If the money was to dry up, they could be in a position where they have to see out the season in whichever league they're in, with no cash available for the huge travelling expenses they undoubtedly incur - not to mention struggling to find players willing to give up their entire weekends and some Tuesdays to play for little money. It's not as if their games are a short hop around the M25!

I can't imagine how they'd survive if this happened. I bet clubs like Plymouth and Torquay struggle with the expense, so whilst the ambition is good, it's only a matter of time before they fail and settle back into Cornish football. After all, why has no Cornish club ever made it to the Football League? It can't happen without sustained financial support.
