My mini Glasto report

Recommended Posts

Afternoon everybody,

Okay lets start with bands seen.

Friday:

The Darkness

Inspiral Carpets

Athlete

The Cesars

Electric Six

Junior Senior

REM

Saturday:

Ben Andrews

Jools Holland

Jimmy Cliff

Turin Brakes

Supergrass

The Coral

Radiohead

Sunday:

Yeovil Town Band

The Waterboys

Asian Dub Foundation

Damien Rice

Grandaddy

The Manic Street Preachers

Doves

My personal favourites would probably be

1. Jimmy Cliff - Perfect Saturday afternoon, whole crowd singing along, excellent atmosphere

2. Supergrass - We were right up the front and therefore got severely squashed, but in a very enjoyable way! (did they show Supergrass on telly? If so, you should definitely be able to spot us)

3. Asian Dub Foundation - bit of a surprise this one, but they really got the crowd going - good combination of anger and songs you can dance to!

4. Athlete - one of my current favourite bands, so it was more about the music than anything else.

5. Junior Senior - I was dragged along to this by EFMTFTV, but it turned out to be well worth it, even if just to see a huge Danish bloke dancing round the stage with a big grin on his face.

As you probably guessed, EFMTFTV spent most of the time in a slightly altered state which led to some very amusing incidents: watching him ask every girl "which way to the gay bar?" and then seeing him dancing manically on his own to 'losing my religion' - whilst all around him looked on bemused <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

All in all, a very enjoyable weekend - I never thought I'd be dissappointed to return to St Albans <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

BTW AFF - I believe 'The Roots' would perhaps class themselves as 'hip-hop' but then again maybe not, because its quite unusual for 'hip-hop' artists to describe themselves as a band. Anyway, it doesn't really matter - their album 'phrenology' is very good.

Well the bands I saw the whole of are in bold and the one's I saw bits of are in Italics and the bold ones get a smiley rating (not a rating for how wreaked I was <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />) out of 10.

First up were The Darkness nice start to the festival, quite funny but not really my cup of tea - basically heavy metal <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> then were The Inspiral Carpets this was more like it, they had some techinal problems during Joe but once they got going they were ace as always, crowd didn't really get going. I heard a lot of people saying they didn't know them but they were getting into them at the end. It pissed down though <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Hip Hop stars De La Soul were next, stood quite a way back and it was nice, but I only really know the stuff off "3 feet high and rising" but they were still good, nice to catch some ledgends. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Went to the new bands tent, where the schedule was a bit knackered so caught a bit of Mew who just sounded like a run of the mill indie band. Then I caught the swedish band The Ceasers who are meant to sound like the Inspiral Carpets and with that Farfista organ they certainly do, very good. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Next up were late replacements for Zwan, The Music I'm a big fan of these so were delighted when they were annonced, my delight was turned to dissapointmet as they were awful, to think I missed Audio Bullys for these <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Electric Six were next as EFM'sL mentioned it was the perfect oppurtunity to push to the front asking if it was the way to the Gay Bar, they were good but not great - The singles definantly stood out <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Off to the new bands tent where I caught a bit of Black Box Recorder who sounded pleasent enough then it was time for Junior Senior and by far the best band of the weekend, tent was rocking, they sounded good and one person got so emotional they invaded the stage to give Senior a hug <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Next to REM now these boys are world class and it showed, a fabulous performance and you could see the emotion in Stripes eyes, thats now a headlining band should play <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Onto Saturday, it was baking hot and watching Jimmy Cliff was a nice way to spend my Saturday afternoon until some bright spark suggested seeing the String Cheese Incident on the One World stage and they were rubbish, still I managed to catch up on some sleep in the field, the only mistake of the weekend <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Then it was time for the Polyphonic Spree who were nice, didn't reall get into it as it was so hot. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Then it was time for the excellent Supergrass , never managed to see this lot before and it was worth the wait, good stuff, with the first big mosh pit of the weekend. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. The Coral followed on Stage 2, stood quite near the back but they sounded good <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Then I made a beeline for Radiohead and after 3 songs I was bored stiff, I looked at my watch and the prospect of standing there while this lot warbled on for another hour didn't excite me so I wandered off to see Super Furry Animals and made the right choice as they were ace! Really put on a good show and got right to the front, the amount of dancing in one of there songs probably ammounted to the same in the whole Radiohead set and the 20 min version of "the man don't give a f***" was a cool way to finish the night. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Onto Sunday and a sit in the mai field having breakfast and reading the paper with the Yeovil Town Band was a nice way to start the day <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Then some wicked dance in the main field to Asian Dub Foundation , they were quality, thought they'd be good but they exceeded my expectations, they have a lot of good songs and a message <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. It was then time for the Sugababes and what a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon and Heidi kept waving at me (at least I think it was me) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Off to the 2nd stage to catch Grandaddy , I'd gone off some of thier recent work but they sounded really good <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Feeder never fail to dissapoint me, not quite as good as in the tent at Reading last year but still a good crowd pleasing set <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Last band of the weekend and it could only be The Streets in the dance tent, the atmosphere was electric and it was packed, got right to the front but Skinners voice was knackered, they should of pulled out really as they left a lot of people dissapointed, the 4th time i'd seen them and the worst but still a nice way to round off the weekend <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

3. Asian Dub Foundation

4. REM

5. Supergrass

6. Super Furry Animals

7. The Ceasers
