Winston not at Boreham Wood

CONSIDERING HIS FUTURE: Striker Sammy Winston.

SAMMY Winston has not joined Boreham Wood - he cancelled his Rebels' contract because he is owed almost £1500, writes Gary Chappell.

Winston, 24, is taking the matter up with the PFA after months of fruitless talks with former club chairman, Martyn Deaner, about his unpaid wages.

Winston said: "I kept getting told I would be paid on Tuesday, Thursday, Tuesday, Thursday, and it just never came.

"It's not good enough the way I was treated."

Winston has a two-year-old daughter and promised a holiday to Cornwall to his girlfriend, which then had to be cancelled because of the lack of funds.

He said: "I'm really thinking about my future. I don't know if I want to be messed around like this again. It happened to me before at Kingstonian.

"But I've nothing against the players at the club or the fans, the fans were terrific towards me last season.

"I also believe the club has got great potential, but it needs to sort itself out behind the scenes before it can move forward."

The following has just been posted on the Boreham Wood Message Board. I have just spoken to Steve Browne and he has confirmed that Sammy Winston has been released from his contract at slough and has signed for Boreham Wood.

Spoke to Gary at the Observer and he states that Sammy told him he's not signed for Boreham Wood. Sound a bit like Browne jumping the gun again - anyone remember Kamel Bullant?

Whatever the truth is re his signing for BW, it doesn't reflect at all well on Slough. Obviously Deaner has learned nothing from the past few summers. Its no way to run a club.

I agree it's no way to run a football club, and maybe there are perfectly good reasons for the delays in payment.I am assured that the players agreed to "good wages", on the understanding that they might not always get them regularly on time.

Can I ask who paid out all the necessary revenue that has been paid to date ( did we have a fairy godmother somewhere)Can I ask who has lost thousands on the club so far--need I go on........

As for Sammy whats £1500, 3 or 4 weks wages-so he must have been paid all the other weeks. And what about James, did the club help him through his years absence with medical and other difficulties-only to see him abandon ship.

Yes, but apart from not paying the rent, failing to sort out our future with the council, failing to pay players wages that cause them to cancel their holidays and promising money he hasn't got, what has Deaner actually done wrong?

Please Deaner, just go.

WHAT! You really think Sammy was on £4-500 a week, get real. He might, [MIGHT!] have been on £200, but the amount is completely irelevant. In any business - yes running a football club at any level has to be a business - you never, never, never offer to pay or agree to settle what you cannot afford! The one and only result is that you go bust! Unfortunately there are too many people - some quite astute businesmen [not that I would necessarily include Deaner in that catagory]- who take their brains out when they get hold of a football club! Good luck with whatever you can salvage Rebels!

Deaner couldn't pay the wages 2 years ago---the players refused to train---we got relegated. I would have thought he should have leant his lesson from that, but hes done it again. He hasn't paid thec ground rent,m and if rumours are true he owes others more than he owes Sammy. I can't imagine any good reason for owing people money nearly 2 months after the end of season. He has put money into the club, but he hasn't spent it wisely. each summer our survival is in doubt. If he can get his act together and run the club properly then fine---if not he should go. At the open meeting he was talking about investing more money in the club---perhaps he should have talked a bit more about paying the money he owes.

30 years service, before you go on about how much Deaner has done for the club in terms of payment;

- How often has he done this on time?

- How many times have the STSA had to bail him out?

- Is the STSA going to carry on bailing him out and making up his shortfalls?

I've no doubts he's put a great deal of money into the club, but how much of this money has been wasted by making promises and extra bonuses which he then can't keep? He's his own worst enemy.

I'd also like to hear Roger's view on the above (Not have a go Roge, just interested to see what you make of it)

No pity for Deaner.

In five years Deaner has failed to learn that you shouldn't promise people money you don't have. He hasn't learnt that he has wasted the money he has spent because it went on decisions that only made things worse. He went his own way, refusing to listen to advice. As a result he cannot get people around him who could make a difference. He values no one's instincts but his own and his instincts, as far as running a football club go, are generally dire.

It might not be high up the agenda in his other, hopefully more successful commercial interests, but a football club is a 100% people business and PR and reacting to customers' needs and opinions is top of the list.

He might well love the idea of running a football club and have thrown himself at it heart and soul, but it is beyond him.

One of us might fancy winning an Olympic Gold medal or being a brain surgeon or something, but if we dont have the necessary skills or natural abilities it is a waste of time.

Deaner has stubbornly continued to make poor decisions and it has cost him financially. But his stubborness means there is no room for pity. His choices have helped lead STFC down a dismal path and created misery for many long term fans who over the years in gate money, programmes and shirts have put in just as much financially.

To sum up....the club was in a better condition when he took over than it is now. Larger crowds, more will to win, more goodwill all round. Did he build on this? No. And when you think back to where STFC was 5 years ago that just goes to show how dreadful his 'reign' has been.

I was not defending Deaner, but remember 5 years ago no one else was interested in saving the club. I dont like what he has done to Slough but at least we survived. I just fed up with Gary constantly knocking him everytime he comes on line. Before the Thorne's the club was run by a committee who left it in £150,000 worth of debt, because the Thorne's couldn't get what they wanted they dumped us. Anyone who has ever run this club has been in it for themselves, and Deaner's no different.

"Anyone who has ever run this club has been in it for themselves, and Deaner's no different. "

But isn't that the exact reason why Deaner should go so Slough Town can be run by the Trust who will put the Club first? We might not be able to pay, or promise to pay, the wages Deaner has but Winston, Willo and CJ have just all taken a pay cut to leave just so they can get security.

I've got no problem with Deaner being in it to develop surrounding land into a commercial venture for himself, as that's what the majority of chairman are in it for at this level. He can do that, no problem (Well, he'd have problems financially as always but that's a different story.) but why can't he just say, right, there's x thousand of pounds towards running the club as my contribution, Supporters Trust can take over the running of the club.

As you all seem to you be privy to a lot more information than me-can some one please list the names of the people who were willing to finance the club at the same time as deaner took us on.

i am not anticipating a long list, more a blank sheet of paper--so there you have it, disregarding all the many mistakes he's made-he has at least kept us afloat.

sorry but there is no other way of looking at it, facts are facts.

True but then Alan Thorne was very popular a few years ago too. Martyn Deaner saved the Club five years ago and should be thanked for that. I don't think anyone has ever denied that and that very point was made in the minutes from the last STSA AGM. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that he's the right person to be taking the Club forward from this point onwards and I'd be surprised if many people thought he was.

I agree with Gary. Let him remain involved so he can pursue his commercial ventures if he wishes but allow the running of the football club to rest with the supporters via STSA or hopefully a Slough Town Supporters Trust.
