Standard of refs

Recommended Posts

Depends where you get too between now and then Smudgey. I think the FA pay for the assessors but dont quote me on that.

Nothing to do with the CCL, but am on the Suburban FL and can advise that the league pays the assessors during the season.

The FA do make funds avl to the leagues on a yearly basis

For those that don't know me here's a warning - I've been thinking..... (Kroons & the other Camberley people will understand!)

I've noticed something about refs and it probably says more about me than the officials.

I watch Camberley's first team, reserves and our two Under 18's teams regularly and I find that I can laugh off a missed offside at a youth game (of course, you still have to mention it to the lino that he missed it), whereas at a first team game exactly the same decision winds me up. I think the same sort of thing is happening in the players minds as well.

The youth officials are paid just as much as the first team's but they usually breeze through the games with a smile and a bit of chatter which is always welcome. I can't recall seeing any officials getting surrounded at under 18's games and the players, usually, accept the decisions and get on with it but for first team games it's far too common and yes, I know some Camberley players are guilty of this.

I know that, as an FA Charter club, Camberley and all the others in the scheme have a duty to give the correct guidance to youth players and even their parents who are watching from the sidelines which may explain the lack of dissent at youth level but, as soon as we get in the CCL Premier it all goes out of the window.

Is it really just copying what they see on TV in the Premiership? I can't believe that for the simple reason I've already stated - the U18's games are usually played in the right spirit - surely the kids are more likely to copy what's on TV than the adults? If not, there's something wrong happening.

I'm happy to say that, at the tender age of 40 something, I've finally grown out of swearing at refs at matches although I'll still raise my voice a bit once in a while. I now just have to learn to control what I write on internet forums when the game's have finished.

One final thought on the subject - refs at the youth games come into the bar and mingle and you can have a good old natter with some of them - this doesn't happen at first teams games anymore. Why not? They used to be a common sight in the bar but now just hide in the boardroom. Having said that, it must take some balls to walk into a bar when a load of punters and players have been giving you grief.

I used to be a club lino in the Camberley Sunday League. It's an easy job in my opinion and I never let the grief from players get to me (people like Duncs were always a pleasure to flag offside!) but then you'd know most of the players from the opposing side and you knew everything would be alright in the bar afterwards. Maybe the officials today are concerned for their safety at times. It would be a shame if that was the case as we all know most of what's shouted from the punters is just bluster and guff but, when you do read about cars being driven at officials during a Sunday league match and people threatening them with knives in some of our more salubrious inner city areas it's obviously gonna affect them.

Jobi Hadanuff, typical Pro comment, that old chestnut if,next week it will be if only the Ref played the advantage rule we would of scored. In this case the Ref.allowed the game to flow and gets slaughtered. He even admits it was a red, so what chance Jobi taking up the task of Reffing,ZERO.

B.J.R. sounds as though this guy is spoilt by you lot at Dorking, you sure he is the genuine article.Must say though that you are a very friendly bunch there. Can never understand why the assessor lets the Ref.know he is at the game in the first place.Surely this is detrimental, like all things with exams, some breeze through them ,others fail the test.

I think I know three or four assessors.

Meadowbank always try to welcome everyone as guests to the ground, irrespective of their position, team they support.

Politeness and civility costs nothing.

....DFC burgers ain't bad, either.

.... and there's always the Asahi !

I think I'll jump in now.

I think we all know that the higher the league, the better the officials you are supposed to get, and therefore you pay more. It is right that the Premier guys are paid more than the Div 1 guys just like the FA Prem guys get more than the Championship guys.

Yes, Div 1 teamswould probably like to pay more for the better refs, but the better refs want the better games which regardless of the teams playing, would be a Prem game over a Div 1 game.

Div 1 teams know what the difference is because it will say so in the League Handbook.

As Krooner has mentioned in the past, we play CCL level for the same reason that refs ref at this level, because the majority are not good enough to play higher.

I personally are more dissapointed with the attitude of some referees rather than their performance. We had one guy this season who cautioned players in an agressive manner totally uncalled for and last year in the Vase we had one burk who said that the level he was reffing was beneath him - bang out of order.

If players start getting nasty to refs, then I can understand refs getting angry back, but sometimes it is totally uncalled for.

There is a ref in this lge who will happily tell you to f"&k off rather go away and if you fire the same 2 words at him it's a card yet they cry they want more respect,I have respect for any man(or women) that will stand in the middle of football pitch knowing full well they will be abused from players, managers and fans for 90 min.

Probaly the ref i came acrossed the other week, while watching a div 1 game.

blew for a free kick for a foul, gave the team the free kick THEN booked the player for diving, when the player argued about his booking was told to f--- o--

the player then swore back at the ref and was sent off.

To say the players managers on both sides were amazed is putting it mildly

Agreed. In my experience referee's put in a much poorer performance when they know there's an assesor there as they seem too frightened to not impose themselves with bookings for the silliest of things. The assesors on the other hand always seem like nice normal chaps with a sensible head on their shoulders, not the demons that the refs seem to fear.

For your info.......most of the CCL assessors are either retired officials or officials not of the same standard of the ref so not to give him a lower mark to benefit the assessor season score and possible prmotion to the next level :bootyshake:
