But none of those schools are a Sikh school which is supported by the Government and our local Council and why it's been forced through so quickly. If it was a mixed primary school I don't believe for one minute it could have been justified.

That's not supposed to be anti-Sikh or anti-single faith schools of any type but it is the reason that the application was successful.

What is puzzling is why politicians are encouraging any single faith schools in this country. Even Slough's former C of E schools are multifaith and use assemblies and lessons to reflect the nature and faiths of the town's people. In several cases the old C of E schools contain a larger number of non-CE pupils, Sikhs, Hindus, Moslems, Catholics, Baptists, Buddhists and more, let alone those from families with no religious base. And most 'CE' families are non-practisiong in any case.

In Northern Ireland, where religious bigotry has led to centuries of heartbreak, there has been a positive campaign to build or merge into multifaith schools and to end separatism in areas such as sport, health, the police and job market. So why here?

Particularly when you face up to the existing problems between the Sikh and Muslim communities in London and the South East. There have been numerous problems, including serious violence, involving young Sikhs from Southall and Muslims from Slough.

Surely these communities need their young people the spend more time together and gain an understanding of each other's cultures and faiths so that the fair integration of British-based people continues.

Separatism is a recipe for disaster - that's why there are campaigns like Kick Racism Out of Soccer.

It's hard not to predict that a Sikh school in Slough will only add to the problems.

The terminoligy "single faith school" is slightly misleading. The Sikh school will be reserving 20% of its places for non-Sikh children and will follow the normal National Curriculum. So, like any other school, they will have to educate pupils in a range of faiths whilst "taking advantage of teaching principles based on the Sikh ethos".You have to question though how many Catholic, C of E, Muslim or Hindu parents are likely to send their children to a Sikh school?

One of the justifications is supposedly that single faith schools have a good record of delivering high quality education although the Sikh school in Hayes has apparently just been slated by OFSTED!

The Government and Council want the school to happen and therefore it will happen.
