SPURS COULD SIGN STRIKER!

Tuesday June 24 2003

Tottenham have confirmed that they are in ‘advanced negotiations’ with Portuguese striker Helder Postiga about a move to White Hart Lane.

Spurs fans may well be getting excited again at the prospect of the club actually signing a striker after famously ‘almost’ signing Rivaldo and Fernando Morientes.

Reports in Portugal claimed that the 20-year-old Porto striker has gone to London for a medical before completing an £8m move to the north London club.

And Spurs have confirmed: “The club can confirm that we are in advanced negotiations to sign Portuguese international striker Helder Postiga from UEFA Cup Winners FC Porto.

"These negotiations are continuing and further information will be available as and when these discussions are completed."

Postiga did not feature for Porto in the UEFA Cup final against Celtic because he was sent off for fighting against Lazio in the semi-final.

Could be chaps could be?

LONDON, June 24 (Reuters) - Tottenham Hotspur, looking to rejuventate their squad after a poor finish last season, said on Tuesday negotiations to sign 20-year-old Porto striker Helder Postiga were at an advanced stage.

Television reports said Postiga, Porto's top scorer when they won a UEFA Cup, Portuguese League and Portuguese Cup treble last season, was in London for a medical with Spurs.

He has played three internationals for Portugal and scored twice for Portugal in their 4-0 defeat of Bolivia in a friendly in Lisbon on June 10.

A native of the northern coastal city of Povoa de Varzim, Postiga is known for good technical skills, outstanding including dribbling and is also a good header of the ball.

He also has a reputation for intelligent movement in and around the box that create opportunities for himself and his team mates. He would also bring some much needed youthful exuberance to the Spurs side.

Some comment on the skills he may bring to the side

I'm not suggesting he's no good, I'm wondering if £8M in the current market is too much to pay for an 'unknown' player, plus I can be pretty certain that a) Hoddle has never seen him play live and B) has no idea whether the guy has the mental strength for the Premiership.

I'd rather we spent that sort of money signing 3 or 4 promising youngsters from the lower divisions. At least they'd understand what playing for Spurs means. Or alternatively pushing the boat out and signing an excellent player on a Bosman, and using that sort of money to pay his wages.

I remember Rebrov scoring a stunner against West Ham in the FA Cup quarter finals in 2001. He never got a chance at Spurs but obviously was a quality player.

A UEFA cup - how many were there? That's from a news agency as well.

I'd never join Spurs as a striker, you turn into a expensive flop, a injury prone player and will no doubt lose your form and be sold for 500K to Rotherham in 2 years. The only club with a worse record for expensive striker flops is Aston Villa.

What? I don't remember that! We were in the quarter finals of the FA Cup 2 years ago??!!

Yes! the year Di Canio scored against Man United when Barthez was hailing a taxi. We lost 3-2 at Upton Park with Rebrov scoring and Doherty getting two. Psycho Pearce scored a screamer of a free kick for us and I was there sitting in the West Stand two rows behind Sven Goran Erikkson and got drenched on the way home
