WALTHAM FOREST 0 HORNCHURCH 2

News of Gbenga Sonuga who was injured in the abandoned match is that he had an operation for tendon damage and had a plate and bolts inserted in his ankle. He has now left hospital.

On a very bumpy and heavy pitch, with occasional light rain falling, neither team was able to settle into any rhythm. Hornchurch kicked towards the garage end of the ground, and had an early opportunity when Michael Spencer took a quick throw and found Andy Tomlinson, and Andy’s shot from outside the area was well saved by Sam Tanner. Tanner then made a good save from Ben Boyce, who had powered through the defence, and Urchins took the lead when a cross field pass by Spencer reached Ben Boyce who turned the ball out to Mark Janney on the wing. Janney moved inside, and touched back to BEN BOYCE who carried on a scored with a shot that went in via the far post. Duane Jackman saw a good centre headed away by Gracey, and Forest came back strongly when a free kick from Stanley rebounded off the defensive wall and was eventually scrambled away. A good run by Clarke from the left created danger but Darren Behcet ran out to narrow the angle and the shot went wide of the near post.

A Stanley corner was headed away by Elliot Styles, and at the other end Paul Shave turned a pass inside to Reece Prestedge who sidefooted to Michael Spencer, whose first time shot skimmed the post.

Stanley almost levelled with a quick flick from a right wing cross, the ball narrowly going wide of the post whilst a long range shot from Knight rebounded off the post and was cleared by Tomlinson.

It was some time before any chances were created in the second half, although a long Billy Coyne pass found Ben Boyce who ran on but keeper Tanner came out to grab the ball on the edge of the area. Mark Goodfellow headed a Stanley free kick away, and Urchins went further ahead when Billy Coyne started the move with a long throw, and Ben Boyce played over a high centre from the right for MICHAEL SPENCER to volley home.

Forest came back and Darren Behcet made an excellent save from Knight, tipping the shot around the post. Stanley took the corner but hit the ball too long. Michael Spencer almost had a second goal with a similar shot, but this time the ball was blocked by a defender, whilst a Stanley corner was cleared by Goodfellow at the other end. Jon Green came on for Janney and was quickly in the action, winning a ball to send Boyce away, but Okunowo did well to get in a tackle to prevent the shot.

A Coyne free kick found Spencer whose shot hit the side netting, and another Stanley corner was cleared by Styles. Urchins could have increased their lead when Boyce made a good opening for Wayne Gray, but the ball bobbled as Wayne shot and went wide of the post. Gray then slotted a pass through to Prestedge whose cross almost found Green, Thomas just getting to the ball first. Behcet again made an excellent save, diving to turn a Thomas shot around the post, with Stanley’s corner being comfortably cleared. Chris Charlery came on for the last few minutes and played up front alongside Wayne Gray. Hornchurch are now away to East Thurrock in the next round.
