No, I don't mean that at all, it just seems to be an 'English disease' that England cricket captains suffer a dip in form, as you pointed out earlier.

Whether it's the extra pressure/responsibiility of the job, media pressure or whatever, we don't seem to turn out characters strong enough to cope with both roles.

Alec Stewart wasn't too bad. Although, come to think of it, he was just as inconsistent as the rest of 'em.

Am I correct in saying that the captain has a say in the picking of the team, alongside the selectors? Is this the same for all cricket-ing nations?

Why don't we try the football approach of having one manager who picks the side, leaving the captain with (slightly) less on his plate.

Almost every high achievement athlete or sportsman of any game is big time selfish, they focus on their part of the "job" better and more consistently than achievers of less

Make them captain and they lose the focus on self achievement, they are distracted just sufficiently to lose out on their own high standards, they are required to look to the needs of the team as a unit, the team as individuals plus press interviews, selection meetings etc etc etc.

pick the biggest one ;-)...

im hearing your point about maybe needing a motivational leader and brearly was an excellent example.. the best players dont make the best captains but nearly always get selected to be so.. the likes of gooch and botham spring to mind.. i just dont agree with selecting the 'captain' then building the team around them no matter what.. there must be at least 3 indivuals in any international cricket team capable of tossing the coin changing the bowlers and deciding on the number of slips
