long story...

Ian_W is the guy who runs the whole kaboodle, he also runs the canvey site and does a lot of things to make sure we live in a peaceful, bug free, converse filled forum.

Urchin Boy has been a bad boy and, allegedly, created aler-egos, one of which was to become a moderator, which he could of missused, he also used a site which blatantly nicked stuff from the canvey website for his own unofficial Harlow site, and this is the tip of the iceberg, allegedly.

Ian was probably doing the right thing at the end of the day.

Hi SteveP.

So he's a serious big cheese. He's probably the one who sorted out my bold message thing stuff. And I thought they don't come bigger than David Holden. Thanks again Ian_W.

So. Suppose that CZ was really me. He gets the top prize. He wipes out a 900 odd posting thread by'accident'. That's it. Nobody died. What else can these people do?

I assumed that Urchin Boy was a Hornchurch fan. Silly me. So he snipped and glued some stuff from the Canvey site and used it on Harlow's? [A bit limiting I would have thought, but what do I know?] Isn't everyone's avatar done like that. What's the problem?

Why is Urchin Man cr@pping himself?

Yes but is The Great One serious about that?

Don't they have something better to do than investigate minor copyright infringement from Canvey's site? Not exactly a hanging offence, I would have thought.

Yes Zealster but you've got Lennon. Laz has a concrete thing. GHA has something else. All plagiarised, presumably.

I think you're covering it up, CZ. What's the deal?

[incidentally, none of my postings should be mis-construed as any form of criticism of Ian_W or the remaining Moderators [apart from Webbo, obviously], nor do they indicate any level of support or sympathy for the boy from Hornchurch/Harlow.]

Referring the message about the "stolen" pictures...

It's known, in the trade, as "leeching". WHen you have a web site, you pay good money for web space, and the amount of money that you spend on it depends on two things: Firstly, how much space you use up (not usually a problem, as you can pick up 500mb of space (500,000kb, if you prefer) as cheap as chips).

Secondly, traffic. You will be allocated a certain amount of bandwidth, and every time a picture (or whatever) is used, it's knocked off your bandwidth allocation for the month. If you exceed your bandwidth for the month, the hosts will either take your site down or charge you for exceeding it.

Not many people care about "borrowing" pictures - everybody wants their pictures to be seen. It's nicer if the originators get some credit for it, but it doesn't often happen. The picture maker will often out a "tag" (a clear layer with the name of their site) on the picture.

Every day, the host produces a report showing exactly where your pictures are being used, so it's very easy to see exactly who is using them. People get annoyed when:

a) People claim their pictures as their own

B) It costs them money and/or crashes their site (which is not uncommon)

c) Some people just don't like it, for reasons best kept to themselves.

In the case of the pictures on my profile etc, there's no issue because they come from http://www.twohundredpercent.co.uk - mine and Trevinha's site - so we can do what we like with them. EFMTFTV's picture came from the same source (although that picture is actually one made by Trevinha rather than me), but it's safe to assume that we're not going to press for prosecution against him, are we? Well, not yet...

Most people who have their own sites are aware that this goes on and the majority are okay with it. I would have thought that an email from the Urchin one asking permission to use the pictures in the first place would have made it all okay, and what would you expect a 14 year old boy to know about copyright laws? I would have thought that threatening to call the police was a bit of an over-reaction, though I can sort of understand why. Contacting his ISP and all the other sanctions threatened in the other email also strike me as a little bit harsh, but there we go. As the owner of these various domains, it's his call.

Impersonating people on the internet has been about for as long as the internet has been. All I can say is that I can't even begin to think how severe the things are that Ian_W won't refer to could be. Best leave him to it.
