from the start of the season, league and cup games, we seem to be leaking too many unnecessary goals. I would like to hear opinions as to why this is happening. My concern is when we play 'stronger' teams compared to teams that we have played our goal diffrence and potential points won could be turned upside down ie. 3 conceded against GWR - should never have happened, 2 against WARE ( in 10 minutes ).....this needs to be addressed soon.

It might be something about having little or no presence in midfield, we don't use or need a midfield when we attack as the use of long balls appears to be basic tactic. However when defending, good teams have a midfield which breaks down, harasses attackers enabling the defense to mop up behind. Too many times this year we have seen an absence in midfield, which when we mounting attacks, provides an early loss of possession, leading to lots of players chasing back with the defensive line taking the strain. Improving the defending by midfielders in the middle third of the pitch would prevent runaways and placing our back line under pressure,-something which happened in the two ware games !

Our league position is misleading or am I the only one who thinks that the standard of the football is very poor and that over time we will be found wanting. I have a suspicion that the results so far have flattered us. I can't believe that we are amongst the best 6 teams in the league, if we are, the conclusion I come to is that the standard of the league is as poor as I have seen in many, many years.

So - not only is our position misleading but so is GWR who, last time I looked are second. A point at their place is not bad.

The standard of football at the club is better than last season, I think everyone would agree.

In the early part of the season we were not leaking goals (I missed the Tilbury and Walton and Hersham games). It was in late September/early October that the defence seemed to be leaking goals. That may have been solved with the addition of Dave Bastian. It appeared that Fabio was getting more and better service with Dave there. I thought that the defence was ponderous at Ware in the first game and also at GWR. Dave has added some speed at the back (though not as much as Dave Allen).

Your point about the midfield is well made but when we did have a strong challenge in midfield we often ended up with only ten players. I prefer to have 11 players on the pitch at the start and end of the game.

I feel that it's not the quality of the midfield that is the problem, it's the make-up of it. Too often the opposition midfielders find space beyond ours, and are able to attack the back line with too much space to work in. The use of one purely defensive midfielder (Paul Marks seems to be the best at this IMO) may ease the problem, but in general our midfield is too attack-minded as a unit.

Added to that, when we play 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 we get exposed on the flanks by sides with wingers (Walton & Hersham being the most glaring example). When you are using a makeshift left back, as we have been forced to do since Phil Kane disappeared, this becomes a major problem. We have tried 4-4-2 a couple of times, but lack natural wide players - Luke Marshall anyone? (yes I know he's injured).

These are, however, suggested tweaks, as the best form of defence is undoubtedly attack when you have the likes of Blackburne, Wallace and Valenti ripping great big holes in opposition defences. After all, they're not exposing our defence when they're picking the ball out of their net!

As we left on Saturday a couple of us discussed the fact that we cant believe that we keep winning when we never look commanding in a game, but hey long may it continue & as long as we improve then things can only get better.

I agree & have stated before that the Isthmian league is very very weak & I also stated that in JC's final season & most of the previous season cracks were appearing & in the end the walls did come tumbling down, however I see a squad coming together with a great team spirit, discipline (with the exception of Jonah) is vastly improving & totally agree with Steph that last seasons standard of football was far worse.

Totally agree Gazza. The team/squad is not quite there yet but things are getting better and better. Stuart is the best striker I have seen in a Town shirt for a long time. Rob in goal is excellent and Minniti looks class. Steve and Del are doing a great job.
