Goalkeepers

Had a look earlier and our run of four different goalkeepers in four consecutive competitive games isn't a club record - thought it might be. Four in four games has happened three times before - 1907/08, 1975/76 (the 4th keeper was Graham Roope) and 1988/89. But the record is five keepers in five games during the 1912/13 season. Who can forget that ? Could be on for a record number of different keepers used in a season though, haven't looked at that yet.

Great research as usual Jeff.

I just wonder though with regards to the 1912/13 season ,rather than ask 'who can forget that ?' the question should be :

who can actually remember that ?

It is just possible

Just checked to see what the record is for the total number of keepers used in competitive games in a season. Turns out the highest ever was 8 during 1912/13 (not surprising as that's when we used 5 in 5 games at one stage). Since World War II the most we've used in a season is 6 during 47/48, 69/70, 75/76 and 80/81. So presuming we use another keeper before the end of the season that'll be a new post-war record and it looks likely that the all-time record might go too.

I have to admit i have given up on asking how the new keeper looked, as I have no confidence that it will be the same keeper for the next match. I am a great believer that the keeper is one of the most if not THE most important player in the team. It does not matter how many your team can score, if you cant keep them out at the other end you are never gonna win. A top keeper also does wonders for the confidence of the defense, something that has also been sadly lacking this season.

With this in mind, I feel the most important thing the club can do, maybe even more so than a new manager is to get a new number 1 signed and settled.

P.S. I know that makes 5 keepers in 5 games, but have any of those keepers actually been bad keepers?

i agree it would be nice to see a keepr last for the rest of the season and not just play one game and walk away. this cant give the defence confidence not knowing who the keeper is

  • 3 weeks later...

Whilst Reed -who seems to have good qualities-was in goal-i thought it also worthy of note that Whincup was still a sub-so maybe -just maybe-we now have two proper goalkeepers;and as such Whincup is not just another'here today/gone tomorrow keeper.

I also am encouraged by ACDC comment on the hastings thread that reed had a really good game-lets hope 'he is finally the one'.

Makes such a difference to the defence if they have a keeper they can rely on behind them

makes such a difference to the defence if they know they are gonna have a flaming keeper. The way we are going I can see a day coming sooner or later when we are gonna be starting with J.K. in goal. There is gonna come a time soon when all the frantic phonecalls at the end of the week are gonna come up with a blank. We need to be told that we have signed a PERMANANT KEEPER and very very quickly.

P.S. does anyone get the impression that this situation is driving me wild?
