Dont you think Paul Campbell would have given as much as those that played yesterday?

He'd probably have run around a lot, but he wouldn't necessarily have fitted into the management's tactical pattern. That's his problem. Same with Dave Allen at times. Loose cannons at the back wouldn't have helped us yesterday.

To be fair..The lack of pace, covering and tackling-back didn't help us much at the back yesterday either..And if Allen or Campbell had played full back at least they would have crossed the half way line one or twice to back up play during the 90 minutes.Wilde needs a quick central defensive partner playing alongside him,or at least one quick full back that can sweep up ocassionally.

Agree that Stuart is the best striker to wear the blue and white for many years.Wallace is a good target man who holds the ball up well but doesn't score enough goals and he does tend to hold onto the ball for too long rather than looking for the simply pass.

Don't think central midfield worked at all yesterday. Not sure what happened to Jonesy yesterday, but a pairing of Rudi and Jonesy would have proved much more effective.(although i do understand that is taking a risk of finishing the game with less than the full compliment of players).

We lack width and pace.Only the fact the Stuart works his socks off up top, disgusies that fact.I agree that we miss the pace of Allen at the back. The makeshift left-backs look just that.If Bastian can't get a game now the first choice left back is injured, then he's got no chance of getting back in.

The substitutions didn't help us yesterday. Also,i think we had too many jouneymen/run of the mill players on the pitch generally.I counted 5 in the second half who certainly gave us no more (and probably less) than the players they have replaced from last year..Its not all negatives though, the management have brought in just as many quality players, and if we can just strenghen in a few areas we could well go the distance and make the play-off places.

Hey LS I'm gonna agree with everything on your post here, but would like to add to it too.

First and foremost love him or loathe him Bastian was part of our failed period in our history with (in my opinion) more negative contributions than positive, mainly discipline/cautions/sendings off and general bickering with opponents rather than proving himself as a decent footballer.

I do think Dave Allen could offer something to us but I also feel that a Wild/Mckay/Edwards pairing a very good one too/good enough for this level's promotion hopes. Additionally, I think that DA has a different mind set to the other 3 and can be fickle to crticism, which is no good to team spirit.

Jonesy is a law onto himself, its pot luck whether he stays on the pitch and can guarantee you at least a caution in every game, so not only can he cost us in a 90min fixture but is likely to be unavailable for 25% of all team selections due to suspensions, sorry, he offers us too many negatives.

I also agree central midfield needs stregthening with a dynamic ball winner/passer and supporter of the strikers type individuel, find a fella like that and we'll be more ruthless.

I think Adam Wallace is as good a target man as we can get at this level, I like him, he has also added goals to his game recently and I also think he is worth 15-20 goals this season if he stays fit, something which Ellis Remy struggled with. However Remy ahead of Minniti and Healy is an option.

We are not far away from a championship/Play Off winning side its just finding the correct individuels which is easier said than done.

What I do like about our team this season alot, is we keep our shape consistently and are competitive, 8 games and only one defeat is a good platform to work from, with tougher games ahead.

I see Stuart was taken off again when he was looking for his hat-trick. Newing has done this to him for years, and i know it pisses him off. What happened to Mckay, he is fast at the back. And yes again, there is a left back on your books,at AFC Hayes.

I thought that 3-3 was a fair result, and it would have been harsh on GWR to have not got anything from the game after being much the better side for all of the first half, and some of the second. Fantastic performance from Stuart, who continues to impress - and in answer to the poster above, he did look like he had a knock when he came off.

For what it's worth, I don't think we have too many issues with the side at the moment. I'm a fan of Ross Edwards and Chris Wild at the back and although neither of them possess loads of pace, they mostly make up for that with good positional sense. McKay also looks to be a decent option defensively, although doesn't seem as good in the air as the other two, which is important at this level. I assume he's injured too, after coming off against Eastbourne last weekend? For me, if we're playing a back 4, I'd go for Edwards and Wild, although if we play a back 5 / back 3, the McKay strikes me as the obvious choice as sweeper. I'm a fan of Dave Allen, and agree that his pace has got us out of jail before, but if we defend well as a unit, then I'd like to think that we shouldn't need to have too many foot races with centre forwards. I'm not sure any of the goals we conceded at the weekend were wholly because of a lack of pace. I think Dave Blower has come on well this season, and looks a decent option both defensively, and going forwards (which he has more scope to do when at wing-back). I don't think Kirby is a long-term solution on the left, but then I'd like to think that when Ellams is fit, he'll come back into the side, as I was very impressed with his defending, and the amount of time he had on the ball.

The midfield for me is the main issue. We don't seem to have any real wide players, which means that we end up with Rudi and Valenti playing out of position as per Saturday. I think that we're better defensively with 4-4-2, and this is why we lined up this way vs. GWR, but we lack players who are going to get to the bye line / whip a cross into the box. I'm a fan of Matt Thompson, and I like the way he always shows for the ball, and although he's a little lightweight, his workrate is good, and he has time on the ball. I'd like to see him paired with someone who can play box to box, and is capable of winning headers and tackles - (Jones would be the obvious choice if he wasn't such a complete liability). Marks may be the man for the job, but he's out by the looks of things. I've seen Morton twice now, and he impressed once, but didn't have a great game on Saturday.

Up front, as I've mentioned, Blackburne is a top player, and I can't fault his all round play. His two goals on Saturday sum him up for me, great workrate, great commitment, and a very good finish for the first one. Wallace is more of an enigma, he's strong, has good quick feet and can take players on, yet he seems to delay laying the the ball off when holding it up, which means we can look laboured at times going forward. I still think that he's a very good option though, and as someone has said already, more than capable of scoring goals at this level. Minniti off the bench is also a good player, who seems to know where the goal is when given a chance.

Worth mentioning Rob Blackburne in goal as well - I thought that Dave Walton would take some replacing, and he's clearly more than good enough. His handling has been top drawer, he's a good shot stopper, and his kicking is fine. I don't think you can ask for a lot more from a keeper at this level.

All in all, I'm more than happy with our start to the season. We've not looked like shipping a lot of goals in the games that I've seen, and I like the fact that we have a settled side. There are good players all over the pitch who look like they want to play for the club / manager, which is a big improvement on last season. I know I tend to be quite positive about the club, but in my view, there's quite a lot to be positive about at the moment.

Agree that Rob is a good keeper.Although as a good shot stopper he should have done better with the first goal on saturday.Although it was Wilde who was mainly at fault for that goal by not chasing back after his man.

I do like the way we hold our shape (even if i don't think the shape isn't entirely the correct one to play). Also like the togetherness in team spirit. We are not far away from mounting a strong challange for promotion, just a few little things that need tweeking still, but they are minor rather than fundermental.

Couldn't agree more. Just look where we are compared with this time last year. And when things aren't quite working you still get the feeling that management has a Plan B. At times last year even Plan A was conspicuous by its absence.

How about offering Sol Campbell a few games. He has plenty of time on his hands at the moment. smilewinkgrin.gif

Unbeaten run to continue tomorrow. Looking to a 5-0 win.

may have been 5 goals, but wrong result!

Good comeback against Ware, but made hard work against an average team, will be tougher on Saturday
