I was talking to my Mum last night, as you do.

 

She said that when she first started work in the bank at 16 in London, her salary was £3 2s 6d per week [it was a while ago]. That's not the point of the story, I'm coming to that. Her train fare to London was £1 per week. The point of the story is that she paid nearly 1/3 of her salary in train fares!

 

There's more.

 

After two years of this, she left the bank for a job with a local Solicitor at a salary of £4 per week. She saved up to buy a bycycle. It was 20 guineas. A bike. 4 times her weekly salary at the age of 18 for a bike.

 

Us youngsters today. Don't know we're born etc. etc.
