Past SSML Teams

Think, but am not 100% sure, but Abbey National dropped down to the North Bucks League

... Abbey National from MK (FCHD entry) joined S.Mids 94-5 season - and were also founder members of the SSML - played at Div Two level until 03-04 when they re-named themselves to Loughton Orient.

They remained at that level until 2007 [had a 'nightmare' in 05-06 conceding 200 goals in 34 games] but played out the 06-07 season - finishing 12th of 16 - after which their final FCHD entry sadly notes: -

Left Spartan South Midlands League (to join North Bucks & District League, but appear to have folded)

According to the North Bucks & DL website, Bletchley Manor were supposed to be playing at Loughton S&SC (though I actually believe they are now at Tattenhoe) - where Orient, Shenley & Loughton (who supposedly 'left' the S.Mids after finishing 4th in 93-94??) and presumably Abbey before them, were based?

During Shenley & L.'s time in the S.Mids there was however an 'Abbey National' playing down in the N.Bucks leagues - so maybe there was no direct link - unless a merger occured in time for the 94-5 season?

I don't have an NL Directory for 1996 - perhaps the 'Former Names' bit exists for Abbey National which might suggest a link BACK to Shenley etc??

It was my understanding that Abbey and Loughton Orient were not the same team, after Abbey pulled out of the SSML at the end of the 2003-04 season they were replaced by Loughton Orient-a club that was made up of former Abbey officials but not actually the same club with a different name. There was an Abbey who played in the North Bucks & District League in the following season 2004-05 which certainly suggests they pulled out of the SSML to join the NBL.

... like I said - I'm only quoting what's been put on FCHD - it's final entry for Abbey National:-

2004 Changed name to Loughton Orient

... and the NL Directory for 2005 somewhat backs this up :-

Loughton Orient

Ground Loughton S&SC Lincesdale Grove

Previous Name: Abbey National (Loughton)

... however there's no entry that I could find in the NLD for the North Bucks Leagues that season - although the Leagues' own website has an archive from 04/05 season with an 'Abbey' in the Intermediate League (2nd Tier) ... up until this season, when they seem to have had a rename again this time to AFC Santander.

... anyway - if someone knows better, then I'm sure the chap that administers the FCHD is very receptive to any updates/omissions and corrections of club details.

... sorry still can't get 'attachments/links/e-mail adds etc' working properly - don't think my browser likes the pop-up window! :(

I'm sure he's a very regular poster on the NL Forum too.

The 2003-04 season was my first full season as The 61 FC (Luton) programme editor and I remember their being a lot of confusion to whether Abbey were the same team as Loughton Orient or not, so I emailed their chairman and he told me Loughton Orient had the same committee members that where at Abbey and it wasn't a name change. Unfortunately I haven't got the email any more (I have checked) but I've considered them as separate clubs because of this.

It can always be tricky to work out when a club is the same but with a name change or related to a previous club or a brand new club etc etc, for instance according to the SSML handbook Berkhamsted were formerly Berkhamsted Town but in the latest "noticeboard" from the SSML it states that this is wrong and that Berkhamsted are an entirely new club, I'm sure that will confuse a lot of people in the years to come.

Having checked the usual sources, I can't find any results or fixtures for Ruislip Manor either this season or indeed last.

Are you thinking of Ruislip Manor Corinthians? They have yet to play a competitive game.

Manorborn - This is the third or the fourth time I have posted the Club History and as you can see Ruislip Manor are very much alive and kicking:

CLUB HISTORY

Tokyngton Manor FC rose from the ashes of former Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Club Ruislip Manor FC, who’s problems had been well documented for some time, and who sadly lost their ground at Grosvenor Vale at the end of a beleaguered 2007/2008 campaign when Wealdstone moved in. The Club were taken over during the close season by new Chairman Terry Springer who heads up the Tokyngton Community Centre in Wembley as well as the New Life Tokyngton Church. Terry bravely took on the Club lock stock and barrel, as well as its debts, knowing he had no players, no ground and no Manager. The first task was to appoint a Director of Football in the form of Matt Oliver who, having spent the last few seasons at Wingate & Finchley Football Club, believed in the potential of the new Club and agreed to come onboard. Dave McArdle was the only individual from Ruislip Manor who agreed to throw his hat into the ring and join forces with the new Club as Secretary following upset at the omission of the geographical location of ‘Ruislip’, with the small Wembley district of Tokyngton being granted prominence at the forefront of the new Club’s name. A new home, in the shape of the Viking Sports Ground, was painstakingly found albeit in the Borough of Ealing, off the A40 Western Avenue in Greenford and the Club proceeded to get their 2008/2009 campaign under way which resulted in a satisfactory mid table finish.

Negotiations are now underway with Brent Council to explore possibilities of the Club playing in its home Borough of Brent, either groundsharing or at a new purpose built stadium, however for the 2009/2010 season a groundshare agreement with Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division outfit Hanwell Town was negotiated and secured following the departure of their previous tenants Sport London e Benfica. The Club wish to register their sincere thanks to Hanwell Town for the privilege of playing at Reynolds Field and a renowned playing surface that will enhance our aspirations of promotion to the Premier Division.

The Club’s Reserve Team, who play in the Spartan South Midlands League Reserve Division 2, and the impressive Under 18’s, who ply their trade in the highly competitive Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League, continue to play at the Viking Sports Ground for the time being.

What do you call a new club with a new name, new players, new manager, new ground, new chairman?

Would that be a "New Club"?

How many of the old fans of Ruislip Manor did the "New Club" take with them? If the fans of an old club do not consider a new club with a new name etc their club has the old club gone out of existance?

Ruislip Manor is actually a place - it's called Ruislip Manor. You can take the Town out of Berkhamsted Town, or the Vale out of Aylesbury Vale, but you can't take the Manor out of Ruislip Manor!

Loosely - So how do you explain the fact that Tokyngton Manor were in the FA Cup and FA Vase last season then, if they were a new Club they wouldn't have been aloud to enter both competitions

Well its one way to buy yourself into the competitions. How many Ruislip Manor fans did you bring to the new club?

Absolute rubbish. This proves absolutely nothing at all. Halifax Town went out of business after season 2007/08. A new club was set up by the supporters, FC Halifax Town, and they competed in the FA Cup in their 1st season 2008/09.

I would wager that it is only you who is convinced that Tokyngton Manor have any connection whatsoever with Ruislip Manor.

I think they have a connection with Ruislip Manor, however that doesn't mean that they are the same club as Ruislip Manor.

As the history states, just the one who took over as Secretary but left the Club high and dry earlier this season

Dave is a decent bloke so don't even think about rubishing him, but even though he was the club secretary I wouldn't have called him a "fan".

So the answer must be none then?

I think you'll find it's allowed
