Tories to cut speed cameras

The Conservatives will cut the number of roadside speed cameras if they win next year’s general election.

The Party is ready to encourage councils and road safety partnerships to look at alternatives to cameras, rather than invest in updated digital versions.

Ideas include using smart traffic signs, which detect the speed of traffic, and, if it is moving too fast, turn the lights at nearby pedestrian crossings to red.

The move is already in use in Spain and Portugal and is one of several identified by Robert Goodwill, the party’s road spokesman.

He said: “We believe that the Government has been like a one club golfer in its approach to speed cameras.

“Many motorists view cameras a money making exercise for the Government. We think it is time for councils and safety partnerships to look at other clubs in the golf bag.”

(Daily Telegraph: September 28).

the politics bit aside.

Speed cameras save lives, fact. If some authority makes money then fine. I'm not quite sure how much revenue it would require to install T/lights on motorways and dual carrigeways and many backstreets. I am all for looking at alternatives to compliment the present system but the overall message must be "speed kills" and I can think of no finer way to hit those who persistently speed to hit them in the pocket (plus points)

Those who have completed an advanced driving test/ a police driving course have been taught to watch out for hidden dangers that the ordinary motorist may not be aware of.

With cell phones on the increase and motorists still ignoring the warnings it is imperative that motorist take even extra care on speeding.

Just my humble opinion :gotcha:

The problem is that speed cameras often cause delays and accidents themselves due to people either a) not knowing the speed limit on the road so slow right the way down 'just in case', or B) suddenly brake when they see the lines and then check their speed.

I agree those who speed should be punished, especially near to schools. But also target those who illegally park near schools for example and can cause greater risk to children that someone 2 miles over the limit.
