Another ex Canvey player become manager of Grays

Former West Ham, Liverpool and Canvey Island defender Julian Dicks has been named Blue Square Premier strugglers Grays Athletic's 14th boss in three seasons.

His appointment looks to have ended the tenure of Gary Phillips, who was left in limbo when Grays opted to interview possible replacements.

Dicks quit playing in 2001 and his only previous managerial experience came at Eastern Counties League side Wivenhoe.

He left the Essex club in June after a six-month spell in charge.

Grays are currently 22nd in the Blue Square Premier, with just one win from their first nine games.

Dicks said: "I played with [Grays chairman] John Moncur for a few years at West Ham.

"I applied the same as everybody else and I went and had my interview last week. They called me back yesterday to have a follow up and then they offered me the job.

"I enjoyed my time at Wivenhoe and managed to keep them up, which everyone said I couldn't do."

Dicks retired in his 20s and moved to Spain for a period, along with becoming a golf professional.

"I was upset at retiring at 29, and it took me around four or five years to get over that," he added.

"I think the set-up is fantastic, West Ham haven't got as much as this, but at the end of the day a great team is one that is doing it on the pitch."
