Grounds unsued/derelict.....

Recommended Posts

Not strictly a SSML issue but as everyone on here has good knowledge......................................... following the news I found out yesterday that the White Lion Ground is still present and empty gathering dust...I though I'd start a thread re unsued/derelict grounds because stuff like this interest me (boring my mrs would call it).....Anyway here's a very short list of the localish ones I know are still there but derelict:

1) White Lion Ground

2) Surrey Docks Stadium - Fisher Athletic

3) Buckingham Road - Aylesbury United (minus the duck on the club shop)

4) Wexham Park - Slough Town

5) Woodford Town - Not derelict just a field really but the floodlights are still there and one solitary sad lonely turnstile.

Any one else know of any more in the London(ish) area...... I think Rainham's Deri Park has been built on now but did stand empty/derelict for a time.

Very sad state of affairs when you see empty stadiums/grounds.... Enfield Town should be making the QE STADIUM AKA THE DONKEY DOME into a swish new Ryman standard one by next season if all goes well, I'm not a fan of athletics track's at stadiums but it'll be ours and that's what counts.

TheColdEnd - This link may interest you. Also a while ago Gavin 'broke into' the White Lion Ground and took some snap shots of the current state it was sadly in, do you want me to try to find the link:

Rhodes I did NOT 'break in' as you stated, I walked in the doors were open, but this was back in August 2008, and the place was still intact, I have not been able to enter since, but I have been back twice, both times I could only manage to view the pitch from the outside and have not seen the damage to the clubhouse which I heard has been vandalised, a real shame.

I have heard that a simillar fate has happened to Claremont Road as well sad.gif

TheColdEnd - Yes both links work, I fear there is something wrong with your computer. Apologies to Gavin, someone from another's Forum squeezed through a fence at the White Lion Ground a while back to take some pics, also when I spoke to Oracle at Herns Lane in June, at Del Deanus's prestigious six a side tournament where Tokyngton Manor were runners up, he said the Clubhouse had all but been destroyed by vandals.

Link working now...Must of been gremlins in the system..... What a sad story with the WLG being derelict??? The local council are missing a trick there, they should invest and restore it to its former glories.... Will that happen??? Probably Not!

It's good to see these pics however shortly after they were taken I believe the White Lion Ground fell into a sorry state of disrepair;

I heard a rumour that it could happen, but nothing certain. really sad, and the clubhouse was very nice and had been renevoated so to be destroyed by vandals is just terrible.

  • 1 month later...

For anybody interested I have seen the following posted, I don't know what is meant by obscure unless it means unused or derelict:

The reknowned Dutch photographer Han van der Meer has some of his panoramic photographs of obscure football grounds on show at the Host Gallery, 1 Honduras Street, London, EC1Y 0TH; which is about ten minutes or so from Old Street underground station. It runs until 28th November. They are from both the UK, and the rest of Europe.
