WITHAM: Manager slams ref's sorry display

Thursday, September 10, 2009, 08:0

WITHAM Town manager Danny Greaves has slammed referee Andy Stock's performance during his side's 4-1 defeat at Stansted.

It was Town's first loss in the Essex Senior League this season after a start that had seen them score nine goals in their opening two games.

But Greaves was left fuming by Stock, who turned up five minutes before kick-off delaying the start by 15 minutes, after the original referee had pulled out at short notice.

And the Town boss didn't mince his words when he spoke to the Chronicle this week: "It must have been the worst refereeing performance I have ever seen in my entire life. I wouldn't let him referee an under-10s match and it was the same for both sides.

"Whoever appoints these officials has got to have a long hard look at themselves be he was absolutely dreadful and in culminated in big decisions going against us at bad times. It just spoilt the home game."

Town started brightly enough and after Kevin Hawes had put them ahead they missed the chance to double their lead, when the David Hawes missed a penalty.

The result means Town have shown a glimpse of the bad old days of last season, after conceding 10 in the last two games, following the 6-3 defeat by London Colney in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round the previous Saturday.

Greaves reflected: "We ended up having to chase the game and were beaten 4-1. They were a decent side but they weren't 4-1 better than us. I feel that one or two players might have got carried away with how we performed in her first games of the season.

"One or two in the last two games have gone missing and it when your losing that you see players' personalities. If the results haven't changed in the next few matches then they will."

On Tuesday night Witham were in Essex Senior League Cup Group B action at home to Takeley where they lost 3-2.

This Saturday they return to the league with a home clash against Barkingside (kick-off 3 pm

Comments (1)Same old sour grapes from Danny Greaves, always blaming somebody else. Time to stand on your own 2 feet, and stop living off your fathers reputation. 4-1 seems pretty comprehensive. Dont blame the ref who stood in at the last minute. IRONEXILE, Maldon

I thought that managers were not allowed to make comments like that in the press.....
