HORNCHURCH 3 STEVENAGE 0

Hornchurch moved into the next stage of the Youth Cup with a convincing win over visiting Stevenage. Three nil might seem a comfortable margin, but this was a match which could easily have gone the other way, as both teams played attacking football and both keepers were on top form. Sutton and Amokeodo both went close in the first few minutes with shots that skimmed the post, and Hornchurch almost took the lead when Amokeodo ran through and Peirce made an excellent save. The ball came back to Tobi whose follow up shot brought an equally fine save from Peirce. Marenghi broke clear on the left for Stevenage and saw his shot scream past the post, and the same player then forced Byrne into a diving save. From the corner Conteh’s shot was blocked on the line and Akin followed up to head inches over the bar.

Hornchurch started powerfully in the second half, Williams heading over from a well placed corner. Barlow nearly found the net with a hard drive after cutting in from the left, Byrne saving well to deflect the shot away, and two successive corners from Thomas Steven was scrambled away. Stevenage almost took the lead when a hard shot from Ulor crashed back off the post, and Byrne twice saved at full stretch. Amokeodo netted with a fierce shot after Peirce had parried the ball, but was given offside, and Hornchurch then took the lead when Michael Smith’s shot was saved by Peirce and TOBI AMOKEODO followed up at speed to crash the ball home. Stevenage retaliated by putting on two forwards at the expense of two defenders and they surged forward, but fell further behind when JAMES BARLOW weaved through to neatly slot the ball home. Billy Byrne saved three goal bound shots as the visitors went all out to get back in the match, but in the fifth minute of stoppage time Amokeodo played the ball through to FRANKIE WILLIAMS to net the third goal.
