That's to do with keeping players far enough away from the spot when a penalty is taken.

But why do we need a six yard box?

So why dont they have circles all over the pitch to keep away from a dead ball kick? There are only 3 places on the whole pitch where the distance isn't left up to the ref to work out.

They should have two extra officials with a length of chain 10 yards long to rush on to the pitch to make sure that the correct distance is being observed.
