Chertsey Town FC slashes player wages

Jul 28 2009 By Paul Warburton, Surrey Herald

CHERTSEY TOWN will slash players' wages but massively increase win bonuses in the club's bid to win the Combined Counties Premier title.

It's the clearest sign to the 18-man squad that three points is everything, with the Curfews retaining only six of last year's set-up - including striker John Pomroy as well as the Bamford brothers, Gavin and Stuart.

Joint bosses Spencer Day and Matt Paterson have all but torn up last year's list and started again by adding 14 new names to the roster, including three players stepping down a league, along with the capture of a 16-year-old English Schools international.

Andy Crossley's parents want their midfielder son, who's on Arsenal's books, to commit to A-levels rather than pin his hopes on just a Premiership career - much to Paterson's delight.

He said: "The family live here in Surrey, and they want Andy to play non-league football while he studies. And if we use him right, rather than chucking him in the deep end, it could work out very well for us."

Andre DeLisser, formerly at Staines, along with Jack Francis, from Hampton & Richmond, and striker Steve Goddard from the Metropolitan Police are the fresh names that made Paterson purr last night.

One half of the management team was also delighted with the capture of keeper Liam Stone from Camberley.

Paterson added: "Liam was the best keeper in the division last season by some way. And what we've tried to do is blend in the players we've retained, with four top signings, as well as a number of new faces who know this division inside out."

Chertsey finished third last season after a mammoth start that tailed off before they picked up towards the end.

Six wins in a row from day one in August was a false dawn, according to Paterson. And he reckoned the pressure surrounding the club proved too much for last year's team.
