Craig Hammond Leaves Royston Town

Recommended Posts

I can only comment on the times that i have seen him play, but i dont think that he could mix it up at all. When he did try, he would lose his focus and was indeed actually very petulant and could have been sent off. Captain leading by example?

Saying that he is a very good finisher. This is where his true quality stands out. I dont believe i have seen a better finisher at this level. Not the most talented technically, but he knows where the net is and that is the most important gift in football. I wish him well in his progression upwards. Could play at a very good level.

CG1985 - Craig is already idolised at Histon and I think he will be a revelation there once he has shaken off the niggling injury he frustratingly got against Cambridge United during pre-season, hopefully he will start at York City tomorrow:

Keeps - When I saw you had posted on this thread I thought it was in celebration of Craig Hammond's wonder goal for Histon on Saturday against Kidderminster, can you try to keep to topic.

Surely the pertinent question is - can you?

And to ensure that I am not accused of wandering off topic, in what way was it a "wonder goal?"

The BBC say : "And the visitors were made to pay for not taking their chances when Hammond finished calmly from 12 yards."

Histon's website says : "But then, possibly shaken by his previous error, Martin Riley made an absolute howler to allow Craig Hammond the opportunity to restore parity so late on in the game. Trying to shepard the ball back to the keeper, at a late change of heart, the Kiddie defender chose to head back to the keeper, unaware that Dean Coleman, Harries keeper, was standing right next to him. In a rash moment, he headed out of Coleman's reach, and Hammond made no mistakes, poking the ball away before sliding confidentially home, cue delirium."

Kidderminster's website says : "After dealing with direct ball after direct ball it was nightmare stuff on 85 minutes as desperate Histon got back on level terms - one long ball over the top looked to have been dealt with as Riley shielded it towards Coleman, only to crouch down and head it past him at the last, much to the glee of Hammond who picked up and rolled it into the empty net."

None of these reports conjure up images of a "wonder goal," more the image of a striker pouncing on a loose ball in the box and rolling it into the net.

Sjj2112 - Well if that's the case then I stand corrected however to make the transition from Step 6 football to Conference without batting an eye lid takes some doing, it's an amazing achievement and Kidderminster were only in the Football League up until recently and playing in the FA Cup Third Round at Coventry City last season.

62 goals in one season at level 26 takes some doing, let alone step 6, Histon recognised that so fair play to the lad, if he fails to make it at least he can live to tell the story this is the level I played at, Blue Square prem, how many can say that, and he has time on his side, really hope he can achieve something as it then gives hope to all the others in our league at steps 5,6 and 7.

My guess is that Craig will start for Histon at Hayes & Yeading tomorrow for the first time in the league this season and The unfortunate Warren Club will suffer a backlash

Manorborn - Thanks, I would have gone to the wrong ground as well then. It looks like I'll have to settle for Tokyngton Manor Reserves tomorrow against Kent Athletic.

Although not directly to do with Craig Hammond however what do members make of Gareth Baldwin stepping down as Chairman of Histon after some eighteen years and his wife as Secretary as well as Vice Chairman John Webster, could it signal the beginning of the end for the Club after its meteoric rise from park football to the Conference. It won't surprise me to see Craig back at Garden Walk, Prodigal Son style, before the end of the season.

I note that John Beck has now severed ties with Histon, there definitely appears to be problems at Bridge Road:

John Websters son plays for Biggleswade Town. He and his wife attended often last season instead of watching Histon. Very nice people, as is their son Mark.

Wader - Strangely Craig told me that everything in the garden is rosey at Histon and he is loving it there so if Royston Town had any hopes of him making a return to Garden Walk, Prodigal Son style, they will be disappointed

Good luck to Craig and Histon, but when did a player ever know what was going on "in the corridors of power"?
