A bit harsh to blame Mawhinney & Co for the goings on in the Premier League, but I catch your drift. Hopefully the whole thing will implode sooner rather than later, then we can all sit back and laugh....

Pro football began to die in this country back in 1992 when Sky stole the rights to live football. The game hasn't looked forward since!

 

The whole thing will implode sooner or later. The whole thing is totally dependent on Sky TV. If Sky went the way of Setanta then most of the premiership clubs would literally disappear overnight. For those that say a company like Sky can't go bust look at some of the recent spate of high profile bankruptcies, it can and does happen. For example who would have thought a couple of years ago that BA would post

Sky won't go bust. Too much funny money washing around in the offshore coffers of News Corp, and isn't it great how little tax they pay...

 

plus they can always pump up the subscription rates, the fools that buy it may moan but they'll keep paying up.

 

They're getting better at televising things though.

Whilst Sky is unlikely to go bust, their cosy relationship with ESPN will make the next round of bidding for the EPL rights very interesting indeed. Witness the recent SPL carve up where they jointly bid significantly lower than the Setanta contract. I can see them submitting a joint bid for the EPL next time, much lower than the last one. ITV and BBC can't afford to bid so it leaves them a free run. What with La Liga suddenly attracting all the players and probably taking over the 'best in the World' mantle, i see a rocky road ahead for the big spending Premier League clubs.

 

The gravy train may be in danger of being derailed.....
