Witham Town v Basildon United 74-75

Recommended Posts

I was fortunate today to be able to talk with one of the older members of our club and take a look at the large amount of programmes that he had collected. One in particular was identified and that was Witham Town v Basildon United at the end of the 74-75 season. This was Witham Town's last home game at 'The Park' before moving to the current ground at Spa Road. Has anyone any idea as to how this game finished?

I know that it might be better posting the the Basildon section but i'm hoping that the general araa will give more coverage. Thanks for any help as I am trying to compile a detailed club history.

It was indeed George Vale!

Also found a 1985 programme v Colchester that marked the official switching on of the clubs floodlights. I note that it will be the 25th anniversay of this event next year, i'll ask if the club wants to do anything.

He also loaned me an old photo of the 1935-36 Mid-Essex Div 3 Championship winning team. Someone has recorded a lot of information on the back about the match and this will prove invaluable in helping expand on the clubs history.

It went down well.

It consisted of 36 pages with quite a few in colour and we seem to be getting more interest in people advertising in it now.

We unfortunately only had half the crowd compared to the same fixture last season but we sold enough to break even.

I'm hoping to make the programme sales pay for itself leaving all the advert revenue for the club.

Took a wander down to the site of the old football ground this afternoon and the original club house is still there, now being used by Witham's cricket team. Their green is right where the football was played so I got a good idea of how open and basic it must have been, hence the move to Spa Road.

I was very interested in your mention of the floodlight opener at Spa Road on 6th March 1985 and as there wasn't a team line up in that programmme, wonder if such a thing exists ? The only thing is that it wasn't the first time the lights had been turned on ... that was for a Worthington Evans 1st round Cup game with Hatfield Peveral on Tuesday 25th September so I suppose that should be the true anniversary ?

The first ever game for Witham Town in the Essex Senior League was a 2-1 win over Southend United at Roots Hall on 14th August 1971 and at the Park was v Tiptree United on September 11th 1971 , a 4-0 victory.

The first game at Spa Road - well that was a single sheet against a club making their second only appearence in the ESL ! This programme will appear in an early edition of the " Centre Spot " so I won't spoil the scenario.

Do you know where Witham played their games before hand?

George said that it was behind the Magistrates Court in the Town, up against the old railway line to Maldon.

As a newcomer to the club I didn't know about the Hatfield Peverel game, just read the info about the Colchester game from the 'Official Floodlight Opening Night' programme cover.
