F1 teams drop breakaway bombshell

Formula One has been thrown into chaos after the Formula One Teams Association (Fota) carried out its threat to set up a rival championship in 2010.

Eight of F1's major teams have been frustrated by deadlocked talks with world motorsport boss Max Mosley over his controversial budget cap proposals.

"The teams have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 F1 Championship," said the teams.

"We've no alternative than to commence preparation for a new championship."

What a disgrace at a time of global recession and people losing the jobs that these few teams are demanding the right to waste millions more on a sport that has become a procession rather than a race.

Formula One's governing body, the FIA, says it will begin legal proceedings over plans to set up a rival world championship next year.

The F1 Teams Association (Fota) said on Friday that eight of its major teams were planning to set up a rival championship for the 2010 season.

But FIA lawyers say the actions of Fota as a whole and Ferrari, in particular, amount to breaches of law.

They say they will issue legal proceedings without delay.

The statement added: "The actions of Fota as a whole, and Ferrari in particular, amount to serious violations of law including wilful interference with contractual relations, direct breaches of Ferrari's legal obligations and a grave violation of competition law.

"Preparations for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship continue but publication of the final 2010 entry list will be put on hold while the FIA asserts its legal rights."

Lets put this in context.

I have always been a follower of F1.

The FIA is controlled by two people.

One - A diminutive egotistical person who thinks the whole sport revolves around him, and who, allegedly, is biased towards Ferrari.

Two - A multi-millionaire who gets his jollies dressing as a Nazi and getting a good beating, (somewhat allegedly !!!!)

Do I need to say more ?

As an afterthought.....

If anyone should have a big say in F1, then for Gods sake, make it Ross Brawn.

If my twopennies are worth anything I think that a new format is desperatly needed... more freedom will be a good thing... maybe even turbochargers again... I also understand that the tracks that the new series have in mind are ones where overtaking is easier so less of a procession and more of a race.... this can only be a good thing.

As for the spending.... this will come down natrually as the sponsorship falls off, but I have no problem if a few billionaires want to pump their dosh into what are essentially british companies!!
