Pre-Season Friendlies Arranged

Slough Town Football Club are happy to announce two provisional friendly dates which have been arranged as follows:

Sat 26th July vs Northwood (a) 3pm KO

Sat 2nd Aug vs Canvey Island (a) 3pm KO

More fixtures will follow throughout the duration of the summer months.

At least this would suggest some stability for whatever sort of side we can field for the start of next season.

I believe a Maidenhead friendly will shortly follow amongst some others.

It's still very encouraging to see the club planning ahead. Most likely I won't be able to make either friendly due to other committments, certainly not the Canvey game (Can't see many travelling to that but it will be a good test for the team).

Surely the Canvey game is the pick of the bunch?! All that way for a meaningless pre-season friendly is one of those senseless things that football fans do!

Notwithstanding what might happen in the coming weeks but you're right Gary that it's good to see the club planning for pre-season several weeks ahead rather than several days behind. If nothing else that's progess on the previous two or three seasons.

Come on you Rebels.

I know a lot of people moan about having no 'big' games, but as someone on the Maidenhead board said they would rather see non league sides play against them that league youth teams. Agree?

Well it's a bit of a mixed one really. Do you try and get a big team to come down and play, just for the sake of the name? Certainly brings the punters in. Remeber last time we played Chelsea at home in pre-season though? Ruud Gullit played as a sweeper for the first half.....

You'll get a much better indication of your squad though by playing a non-league side who won't sod about and play it as a non-competitve fixture. It all depends if you're after getting the punters in or having a competetive match.

Personally I think a good blend of the two. Some third or second division sides would bring relatively strong teams down and also add some numbers to the gate. We've got good enough links with Reading (McDermott), Arsenal (Vic Akers), and Chelsea (Stuart Bannister - old kit man) to have those three sides along which would add at least 500 onto the gate for a friendly and most likely a relatively strong side, that would have to be the ideal?

It was me that said that, and it was on rymanfans, not the MUFC message board!

I think by playing the likes of chelsea, getting 1000 kids turn up expecting their first team and only getting a glimpse of a couple of reserve players, you're p***ing the local public off, not encouraging them to come back. That's why I'd rather play Slough, Hayes, Woking, teams like that. At least you know what you're getting.

Easy victories usually!

If you can get a couple of bigger name players guaranteed in the starting line up of a big name club, then it's worth it. Getting punters in and getting a good atmosphere and some decent football on the pitch may lure them to come back though so occassionally it's not too bad an idea to get some big names in?

The difficult thing about that is you can't really arrange a home friendly until we know where we're playing...

If it's at Windsor, we have to arrange it around them. Chances are it will be, as it is becoming more unlikely with every passing day that we will be able to play even friendlies at Wexham Park next season until action is taken.

You'll always be welcome at Station View. Although it may not be practical you'd be surprised at the amount of support and respect Harrogate Railway supporters have for Slough Town. I know to beat the day we had at Wexham Park would be impossible. I have never felt so welcome at an away ground and I know many Rail fans will carry the memories forever. Good luck for the future and if there is a chance of you ever coming up north you'll get a loud but friendly welcome.

Maybe not this season Shep, but we want you to repay the hospitality one day!

We'll be visiting soon enough. And you'll always be welcome back to Wexham Park. Some of the best away fans I've seen visiting.
