After 10 posts I think - and no-one has requested a Witham forum on here btw (but then I think you already have one)

As an authority on ESL bars, here's my take on the good, bad and the Takeley.....

BARKING: Nada, as bar has been closed down for a few years. Nearest pub is Roundhouse, ten mins walk away but has strong links to the Star Wars' bar.

BARKINGSIDE: Nice and roomy, good service since the pregnant one left, (hi KA xx) but they get some decent wine in if you phone the right people before hand. Nearest pub is the Fairlop Oak, about 10/15 minutes walk away.

BASILDON: Good wine selection, smells a bit musty and wear your thermals if playing there after September, as they never seem to have the heating on snow Nearest pub is, I think, the Jolly Friar about 20/25 minutes from ground.

BOWERS: Another large establishment that smacks of working man's club. Frequnted by the Ant Hill Mob and other strange oddities. Wine is normally pants although I did take a walk down the local offy once and purchased two bottles and was given licence to pay corkage. Sorted smile No pubs in the local vicinty.

BURNHAM RAMBLERS: Two bars, one or both may be open on a match day depending on size of opposition's support or function being on later in the evening. Passable wine too. Again a pub desert around the ground, but worth going early for a trip into the village centre or nearer still the Railway opposite the station.

CLAPTON: Another place not for the faint-hearted after September and can be hit and miss as to whether it will be open or even if they have some booze, they may not be willing to sell you any. The famous Old Spotted Dog has gone the way of many in the area and is now closed, but nearest is Hudson Hawk/Bay, but has been the scene of a few murders of late, so stick with one outside Forest Gate station.

ENFIELD: Now parked at Broxbourne so no having been I cannot comment.

ETON MANOR: They have moved on and now parked their caravan at Barking, so see above.

HULLBRIDGE: Small club house and dominated by some strange person of Italian decent, who allegedly was on the short list for the part of Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars. The smell of Lasagne permeates the air on a match day, but don't hold out much hope of sampling said delights. Again nothing pub-wise in the immediate area.

LONDON APSA: No bar and no pork scratchings.

MAURITIUS SPORTS: No bar and no pork scratchings.

SAWBRIDGEWORTH: Confined area with little atmosphere, but a few nice locals in the village, around five to ten minutes stroll.

SOUTHEND MANOR: Once again a few words in the right ears will get you a few bottles of vino brought in for match days. Nice food served there too. Nearest pub is the White Horse going away from the front, or the Crown on the front itself.

STANSTED: Much improved with a decent stock of wine for a football club. If too packed, which won't be often, then there is a pub outside the ground on the right that isn't too bad.

TAKELEY: Had no bar last season, but Four Ashes pub is okay. Not a place to visit in bad weather unless the stand has been completed now.

TIPTREE: Never been but I understand that they will be sharing some of their games at Maldon next season. Maldon is a quality town for a pub crawl, starting at the White Horse and making your way to the ground. Big social facility at the ground too, but like Burnham will only open both bars on certain occasions.

Coup, you really need to take in the Selex Club in Gardiners Way next time you go down to Bas U, one road up from Gardiners Close or maybe three minutes across the field. The CAMRA South East Essex Club of the Year for 3 of the last 5 years!! Three real ales on hand-pump and maybe one on gravity if you are lucky. No good for you but I have heard that the wine cellar is passable grin You might even stay and watch Basildon Town play!

I await the backlash grin
