I can only speak from my perspective at ESL level so in no way should this be taken as a tablet of stone.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of bumping into Rob Errington in the salubrious surroundings of Southend High Street. I can say, hand on heart, he is one of the most polite and decent of people I've ever known in any walk of life, let alone just football. He's an example of all that is good in the Essex Senior League.

Sadly, though, it brought into sharp focus the contrast between him and a minority, albeit a sizeable one, of individuals of varying responsibilities within the league. Health issues aside these past 18 months, since I was persuaded to take on a more hands-on role in non-league football, the only negative aspects of my life, the only hassles I've had, the only thing that's continually caused me problems are a direct result of people working within this league.

Whether it's been players whose only intent is to cause trouble on the pitch, angry telephone exchanges from club officials, having to mediate within between factions, even having to remind printers that we pay them to provide a service, it seems to me that an awful lot of people regard a league 5 levels below the old Fourth Division as somehow something worthy of inflating their own ego and self-importance.

It's incredible the number of people who behave as if they're in Premier League when in reality they're just a couple of levels above park football in a competition only those involved are remotely interested in.

It should be stressed, of course, that these are very much a minority and that the vast majority of players, officials and supporters are good decent people who take the football what what it is and nothing more. That's what makes the rest of them, however, stand out all the more, and it's those that drive decent people away from the game.

And thank God the cricket season's started.
